Farmington Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited and CT DEEP Fisheries biologists conducted native trout redd survey training on Beaver Brook in Barkhamsted CT. on October 27. Redds are “nests” that trout construct in the fall to lay and fertilize eggs. A great group of enthusiastic volunteers were trained on how to identify redds and use a mobile app for reporting any findings. This data aids fisheries biologists in the overall management of the CT native brook trout restoration program. Volunteers will now perform surveys on other selected streams throughout the spawning season. Special thanks to Brian Eltz, DEEP fisheries biologist and Jim Buchok, Farmington Valley Trout Unlimited Conservation Chairman for arranging this important training.

🐟 Help Protect Native Brook Trout — Volunteers Needed!

Native brook trout are entering their spawning season, and we need your help!

The Farmington Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited is partnering with CT DEEP Fisheries to survey local streams for redds — the gravel nests where trout lay their eggs.

These surveys provide valuable information to fisheries biologists and support efforts to protect and restore Connecticut’s native brook trout populations.

CT DEEP fisheries biologist Brian Eltz will lead training on identifying redds, followed by a field survey at Beaver Brook.

Following training, volunteers will have opportunities to independently monitor selected streams throughout the Farmington River watershed, approximately every two weeks through late November or early December.

Whether you’re an angler, conservation enthusiast, or simply someone who cares about our local waterways, this is a great opportunity to get involved and make a meaningful contribution!

We are having a “Hardy/Greys Demo Day” here this Saturday, October 24th from 11 AM to 3 PM. This will be your chance to see and play with the new Hardy and Greys rods & reels, including the brand new Hardy Tactus nymphing & dry fly rods. Our Hardy/Greys rep Earl Evans we’ll be here and you can pick his brain. We will have food and drink, and you can see all the positive changes we’ve made inside our store recently. Earl will be giving away one of the new Hardy Tactus 10'8" nymphing rods. Everyone who comes will get a free raffle ticket and additional chances can be purchased for $20 with all proceeds to go the the Farmington River Anglers Association to help fund their efforts for a better river. (we will be selling them in advance in the store this week and at the Farmington River Anglers Association meeting this Wednesday). You don’t have to be present to win.

Reel Recovery could use our help. This non profit organization offers free fly fishing retreats for men living with all forms of cancer. My father passed away from complications from leukemia so this organization really hits home!

A few more photos from our October Monthly Gathering.
FVTU was happy to host Colonel Brian Newman of the Connecticut Environmental and Conservation (ENCON) Police. Brian gave a very interesting and informative presentation on the duties and responsibilities of his agency. Overall, its amazing how they do what they do with so little staff and resources. FVTU supports and appreciates the work and efforts of the Colonel and his agency.

Our first meeting of the year was held last night at the Back Nine Tavern in New Britain. 35 people attend, both TU members and non-member alike. The evening started with a great raffle selection followed by a very short Business Meeting where officers were voted in for the term ending in October 2028. Our Secretary, John Ferrantino, presented the slate of officers recommended by the full Board of Directors. He then opened the call for nominations from the members present. As no challenge was made to any position as recommended by the Board, the slate of officers was voted in by the Secretary. They are;
President - John DiVenere, Vice Presidents- Don LaChance, Carl Swanson, Bob Salerno and Rich Mette, Treasurer- Jeff Belrose, Secretary- John Ferrantino.
