FVTU would like to congratulate Dr. Sarah Faulkner on her recent retirement. Sarah and East Granby Middle School have been with our Trout In the Classroom program since the beginning, some 20+ years.
We’d like to thank her for her tireless support of TIC and her commitment to science and environmental education. She will be sorely missed.
We know that she will continue her environmental activism in her community and hope this gives her more time to enjoy her passion for bird watching and photography.

Time is running out - Trout anglers take our survey about the Catch and Release season. https://forms.cloud.microsoft/g/3VUfzSSYjy

This survey closes on June 20th at 12:00 noon.

Connecticut is now five years into having "no closed season" for trout as established by Connecticut Public Act 21-12 by the CT General Assembly. Only this group can create or modify a law. CT DEEP can only pass regulations to support such laws. CT DEEP cannot single handedly bring back Opening Day.

Back story: In 2021, after the passage of Public Act 21-12 by the CT General Assembly, the Fisheries Division sought angler input to obtain preferences and desires related to trout fishing for the 2022 season. Based those responses the Fisheries Division opted to implement a default statewide regulation requiring "catch and release" for trout from March 1 until the second Saturday of April. Now, after five years of a Catch and Release season for trout, the Fisheries Division is once again seeking angler input on preferences.

Thank you for taking a few minutes to share your preferences and opinions about the Catch and Release season for trout. Take the survey https://forms.cloud.microsoft/g/3VUfzSSYjy

One way to catch more trout is by learning the bugs!

You don't need to memorize every bug and their Latin names, but every fly angler should know these 4 major aquatic insect groups:

Mayflies
Slender nymphs, upright-winged adults, and the backbone of classic dry fly fishing. When trout are rising aggressively, mayflies are often the culprit.

Caddisflies
Worm-like larvae and tent-winged adults. Caddis can be a huge food source, especially when fish are chasing movement in the drift or reacting to skittering adults.

Stoneflies
Sturdy nymphs that live in cold, clean, moving water. They're a major meal for trout, especially in rocky riffles and faster runs.

Midges
Tiny, year-round food. They're easy to miss, but trout don't overlook them, especially in colder months and slower water.

Trout will tell you what they want if you slow down and pay attention.

And that’s a wrap for 2025-2026 Trout In the Classroom year!
Newington HS closed out the year with their trout release at Mattie’s Grove. They had a great year.
I have to give a huge shout out to all the teachers and volunteers that made it all work. Till next year!
