Outreach Worker, David had a visit with Blake, Cole, and Connor in Rumney. They enjoyed a day of exploring and playing in the woods!

Mayhew challenges and helps at-risk New Hampshire boys to believe in themselves, work well with others, and find their best. It is the only all-boys program in the state that combines school-year mentoring and a residential summer program for at-risk boys, tuition-free, through high school graduation.

All Mayhew participants benefit from regular mentoring visits in their home communities from Mayhew's team of professional outreach staff in one-on-one and small group settings throughout the year. The focus is on helping the boys apply the program ideals of respect, responsibility, community, and challenge to their lives at home, school and beyond.

Join the Mayhew Program this Wednesday, September 2nd at 6:00 PM at NHTI in Concord for a free screening of Gone Guys.

"Over the past fifty years, boys and young men have steadily disengaged from school, work, and broader society. They’re falling behind academically, struggling with loneliness and isolation, and facing rising rates of substance abuse and su***de. This 45-minute documentary draws on the influential work of Richard V. Reeves’ “Of Boys and Men”, illuminating these challenges through powerful data and compelling personal stories"

After the video we will have a panel discussion and have a Q & A with audience members.

This week we are spotlighting our Outreach Team!

Meet Tolia!

Tolia joined the Mayhew team in 2023.

Tolia said “I had experience working for summer camps before coming to Mayhew, and I’d always enjoyed it. But during the first summer I worked on the Island, through my conversations with the boys, I came to realize how much more Mayhew and its program were than just another camp. They would talk about how Mayhew had helped them learn to make better decisions in their lives off the Island, or how the program had helped them with employment, or how they’d tried something that summer they’d never thought they’d be able to do. I felt like Mayhew was a place where I could combine my enthusiasm for working at camps and my desire to do something I felt was more meaningful. So when the opportunity came up to work for Mayhew year-round, I leaped at it.

Before coming to Mayhew, I’d lived most of my life in Florida, and though the Granite State wasn’t my original home, it’s aways meant a lot to me because it’s where most of my family have lived my whole life. I went to college at the University of North Florida pursuing a degree in anthropology and trying to learn a little bit of as many languages as I could take classes in (that’s a major passion of mine). I also have a passion for music, and I try to bring that to the Island to share with boys as often as I can. With Mayhew, I can say that I’m glad to have found a place where I can do work, I like doing, work I find meaningful, and work that helps out the community here in New Hampshire.”

This week we are spotlighting our Outreach Team!

Meet Jim!

Jim joined the Mayhew team in 2009 and works with the Extenders. In the final two years of the program, Mayhew focuses on supporting the boys through high school graduation, assisting them in establishing goals for their lives beyond high school, brainstorming ways to overcome barriers to success, and emphasizing the importance of giving back to Mayhew and the broader community.

Jim said “ I consider myself very lucky to work for the Mayhew Program. I started working here in 2009 and have enjoyed every moment of it. Not too many people can say that they enjoy what they do for work. While I get to say that some days I get to fish all day, hike a mountain, eat pizza and chat with the boys or just the simple fact of getting to live on an island every summer. I have lived the vast majority of my life in the Granite State where I grew up enjoying all the mountains, lakes, and wildlife. I went to college at the New Hampshire Institute of Art where I majored in Fine Arts. Outside of Mayhew I pursue another passion as a landscape painter."

This week we are spotlighting our Outreach Team!

Meet Ian!

Ian joined the Mayhew team in the summer of 2025. He came to Mayhew after a long and fulfilling career in education, both in the classroom and in the great outdoors. He said “From early on, I discovered my passion for supporting young people—challenging them to reach beyond their limits and helping them uncover their true potential. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a child’s eyes light up with pride when they succeed in a place where they once struggled. That joy is what draws me back to this work -day after day. My time at Mayhew has already given me the privilege of continuing to inspire and support boys across New Hampshire while sharing my own deep love for the outdoors.”
