A walk with Julie Michaelson is always fun!
An entomologist and pollinator specialist with the Xerces Society, Julie is also a BLT board member and leads fascinating insect-focused events for us each year.
Today’s walk at Young’s Pond was no exception. The weather and the fall foliage were spectacular and there was so much to see and learn.
🦗Favorite new words: stridulation and crepitation: the different ways grasshoppers and related species produce sound with their wings.
🌳Fun fact (among many): termites rely on specialized microbes to digest cellulose in wood. Without this, they would not be able to help break down trees that fall in the forest.
Thank you Julie, for helping us to see the incredible diversity of the insect world and to better understand the importance of insects in the workings of all ecosystems.
