Get Colony Cat Shelters Winter Ready

If your outdoor cat shelters are the kind with one storage tub inside another, make sure to separate them when checking straw because water may have gotten between them if any cracks or holes exist. You want to make sure the entire shelter apparatus is clean and dry and free of spiders 😁

Good bedding materials inside cat shelters will increase the comfort and warmth of cats by trapping their body heat. The material must be dry and loose, so cats can burrow into and underneath it. While they may SEEM like a good choice, you should avoid using blankets, towels, flat newspapers, etc. because they retain wetness, they absorb body heat instead of reflecting it, and cats can only lie on top of them so they can actually make the cat colder.

STRAW (never hay!) is the best, while *shredded* newspaper will also work f absolutely necessary. You can get loose STRAW or a bale at any feed store. If you know others caring for colony cats, splitting a bale is the best option.
Choose STRAW and NOT hay because it can absorb more moisture and is less prone to mold or rot. (information from www.neighborhoodcats.org).

Fun fact #1: squirrels use their tails for balance, agility when navigating tree climbing and balance balancing and to blanket them to help stay warm?
