New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill is the home of the Worcester County Horticultural Society, the third oldest organization of its kind in the United States. The society purchased Tower Hill Farm in Boylston in 1986 and has been building a beautiful four season botanic garden on its 171 acres ever since. The property is named after the surveying tower that was perched on the highest elevatio

n of the property during the construction of the Wachusett Reservoir, which during the day can be seen from several spots including a wooded trail and the terrace for our cafe. New England Botanic Garden is home to a prized collection of plants, from flowers to shrubs to trees, expertly cared for by a dedicated team of professional horticulturists and supported by the staff and volunteers who help make the Garden the vibrant organization and destination that it is.

The rosy maple moth (Dryocampa rubicunda) is a North American standout with vibrant pink and bright yellow coloring. Far from just a fashion statement, the colorful palette perfectly mimics maple seed pods to trick hungry birds.

When spotted, these clever moths fold their wings, curl up, and play dead. Their ultra-fluffy wool also absorbs sound, scrambling radar tracking from predatory bats. Before sporting these glam adult colors, they start out as green-and-black-striped caterpillars that feast on maple and oak.

Can you believe it’s September already?! As summer winds down and fall approaches, here’s what’s going on at the Garden this month:

- Fairy Hollow is here! Discover a miniature world where magic blooms around every corner as The Ramble is filled with more than 20 intricately designed fairy houses. This year’s exhibit features houses crafted by artists from New England and beyond. Explore the exhibit during the day then see it at night during Fairies Aglow, starting September 19.

- Local artist Suzan Osborn is displaying a captivating new collection of oil paintings inspired by her time spent at the Garden. The exhibit, Timeless, Floral Landscapes by Suzan Osborn, features luminous floral landscapes that celebrate the color, movement, and quiet beauty of the Garden, while offering fresh perspectives on familiar spaces and blooms. Check it out on display in the Milton Gallery.

- Explore a world of color and wonder with Glass in Flight. This unforgettable exhibition features 30 stained-glass and steel sculptures crafted by artist Alex Heveri. The pieces are on display throughout the formal gardens.

- Celebrate 40 years of the Garden with us! Deeply Rooted, a special anniversary exhibit, showcases our history alongside stories and memories from some of those who have supported us along the way. The exhibit is on display in the Fern Gallery.

- Plant Shows return this fall! Join us for the Buxton Branch of the American Begonia Society and the New England Chapter of the Gesneriad Society Show & Sale on September 19 & 20. Then, enjoy the New England Dahlia Society Show & Sale on September 26 & 27.
