🌄🐾 Making memories and celebrating 110 years of adventure! 🐾🌄

Today, we took one of our clients to Shenandoah National Park on a special 110 birthday celebration/free entrance day! 🎉 What an incredible opportunity to experience one of the beautiful treasures right here in our own backyard.

For our client, it was their first time seeing Skyline Drive, and they got to take in the breathtaking overlooks and mountain views throughout the Front Royal area. Of course, no adventure with Hokey’s Healing would be complete without plenty of time interacting with Hokie! 🐕💙

Days like this are about more than just getting outside they’re about building confidence, creating positive memories, experiencing new places, and strengthening connections. We’re grateful for the opportunity to help our clients explore, learn, and experience things they may not otherwise have the chance to do.

🐾 Learning Through Hands-On Mentoring! 🐾

Today’s mentoring session was all about responsibility, confidence, and learning new skills with Hokie as the perfect teacher! 🐶💛

Our client learned how to properly care for a dog by:
✂️ Trimming Hokie’s nails
👂 Cleaning his ears
🪮 Brushing his coat
🛁 Learning how to safely bathe a dog—and then giving Hokie a bath!

Hands-on experiences like these provide opportunities to build patience, responsibility, confidence, communication, and practical life skills while creating a positive connection with animals. Hokie was happy to lend a paw and even happier to get all cleaned up! 🐾🫧

🐾 Another Day of Evidence-Based Mentoring with Hokey’s Healing! 🐾

Today, we took one of our clients to the dog park in Strasburg for some time outdoors, positive social interaction, and—of course—plenty of time with dogs! 🐕❤️

While the visit may have looked like simply a fun trip to the dog park, evidence-based mentoring allows us to turn everyday experiences into meaningful opportunities for growth.

During today’s outing, we worked with our client on:

🐾 Managing social anxiety and becoming more comfortable in social environments
💬 Communication skills and how to effectively communicate within the dynamics of their home
🧩 Problem-solving and identifying healthy ways to navigate difficult situations
📝 Creating an action plan for addressing challenges at home
❤️ Preparing for uncomfortable conversations with previous partners and discussing ways to communicate respectfully, establish boundaries, and remain emotionally regulated

One of the most valuable parts of mentoring is that we don’t simply tell clients what they should do. We model it, practice it, talk through it, and work alongside them as they develop the skills to handle these situations independently.

For many young people, difficult conversations and social situations can feel overwhelming. Having a trusted mentor beside them to work through those situations can help make the uncomfortable feel manageable.

Communicating. Modeling. Practicing. Problem-solving. Building confidence.

That’s what evidence-based mentoring looks like—and sometimes, it happens at a dog park with a therapy dog by your side. 🐶💙

🐶 “I thought we were here to provide them with therapy.”

At Hokey’s Healing, every fishing trip is a little bit of therapy… and apparently a lot of drool! 🐾😂🎣

🎶 LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT! 🎶

The Sunset Series finale is here! Join us tonight at the Amphitheater at Bowman Library from 6:30–8:30 PM for one last summer concert, presented by Blue Ridge Agents Insurance.

It's also Kids Night, so bring the whole family and enjoy a bounce house, yard games, and other family-friendly activities. Chick-fil-A and Uncle Beehive's Ice Cream will also be on-site with food and treats available for purchase.

A huge THANK YOU to the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum for generously donating free admission tickets to Hokey’s Healing! Your kindness gave one of our amazing clients the opportunity to spend the day exploring, creating, and learning through hands-on play.

From interactive exhibits to exciting STEM activities and creative adventures, our client was fully engaged and absolutely loved every minute of the experience! Moments like these help build confidence, encourage curiosity, strengthen problem-solving skills, and create positive memories that last a lifetime.

Hi everyone! I’m excited to join the team at Hokey’s Healing!
I graduated from James Madison University with a degree in Social Work and am currently pursuing my MSW. I have experience working in psychiatric settings and with children of all ages, and I’m passionate about supporting others and helping them reach their goals.
When I’m not working, I enjoy staying active through all kinds of fitness, spending time outdoors, and traveling whenever I get the chance.
I joined Hokey’s Healing because I love being an advocate for others, building meaningful relationships, and making a positive difference in someone’s life. I’m looking forward to connecting with the families and community I get to serve!

🚓💙 Building Connections, Creating Opportunities 💙🚒

Tonight, Hokey’s Healing had the privilege of taking one of our clients to National Night Out in Front Royal! Community events like these provide meaningful opportunities for youth to build positive relationships with the people and organizations dedicated to keeping our communities safe.

Our client participated in an impaired driving activity using drunk goggles while driving a golf cart, gaining firsthand insight into how alcohol and drugs can affect coordination, judgment, and reaction time. This interactive experience sparked important conversations about making safe, healthy decisions.

Throughout the evening, our client met the Sheriff, local law enforcement officers, K-9 teams, juvenile probation officers, probation officers, and firefighters, helping break down barriers and foster positive, supportive connections with trusted adults. We also learned about The Phoenix Project and the vital services they provide to individuals and families affected by domestic violence, highlighting the importance of community resources and knowing where to turn for help.

Of course, the night wasn’t all learning. We enjoyed great music, collected plenty of fun goodies, and had an amazing time connecting with our community!

At Hokey’s Healing, we believe evidence-based mentoring extends beyond one-on-one conversations. By exposing youth to positive experiences, community resources, and caring professionals, we help build resilience, confidence, and the skills they need to make informed decisions for their future.

📚🛍️ Back-to-School Success Starts Before the First Day of Class! 🍎✏️

Today, we had the opportunity to take one of our clients back-to-school shopping, and it was about so much more than buying school supplies. Together, we created a budget, compared prices, prioritized needs over wants, and made thoughtful decisions to stretch every dollar.

These real-world experiences help build important life skills like financial literacy, planning, problem-solving, and responsibility. Learning how to manage money and prepare for the school year helps young people build confidence and independence that extends far beyond the classroom.

At Hokey’s Healing, we believe mentoring happens in everyday moments. Whether we’re shopping for school supplies, exploring career interests, or spending time with our therapy dog Hokie, every activity is an opportunity to teach practical skills while building trust, confidence, and resilience.

We can’t wait to see our client start the school year feeling prepared, empowered, and ready to succeed! 💙📓✏️
