“It helps me look at things a little differently and not feel so paralyzed,” she said. “Another fire or windstorm would be scary but (if it does happen) at least I can say I woke up and tried to ready things as best I could.”
These are words shared by Jean Hooper—a 15+ year Altadena resident and GER3 Home Hardening Program homeowner—during last month's IBHS tour of certified homes. GER3's program informs homeowners on key aspects of home hardening to increase their wildfire resilience. We provided Jean with necessary upgrades including the creation of defensible space, noncombustible gate replacement, and ember-resistant mesh installation. Through these efforts, Jean was able to get base-level certified via IBHS's Wildfire Prepared Home program.
As we approach the 1-year anniversary of the , we look forward to continuing our work of community wildfire resilience in Altadena by targeting still-standing homes. Thank you to our partners, Rebuild Altadena, National Day Laborers Organizing Network, and the Pasadena Job Center for being our labor-partners in this work. Through this partnership, we have been able to keep recovery funds in the local economy and invest in skills-building with local workforces.
