Today is Memorial Day.

Not a sale.
Not a long weekend.
Not just cookouts, flags, and time off.

Today is about sacrifice.

As a Marine Corps Military Working Dog Handler, there are some names that hit differently for us. Men who walked point. Men who trusted their dogs with their lives and whose dogs trusted them without hesitation. Men who stood between danger and everyone behind them.

Today, we want to say their names.

These Marines gave everything.

Some died beside their dogs. Some left behind dogs who carried their memory home. All of them walked into danger so others could come home.

We know many families are grieving today, and many heroes from every MOS, branch, and generation deserve to be remembered. But today, as former Marine Corps Military Working Dog Handlers, we wanted to pause and honor the brothers who shared this path.

Say their names. Remember their sacrifice. Live worthy of it.

Tonight, we had the opportunity to sit down and spend some time with congressional candidate and fellow veteran, Keith Gross, here in Holmes County.

Politics aside for a moment, one thing stood out to us immediately:

He was present.

Not rushed.
Not talking over people.
Not reading from cue cards.
Not giving polished, rehearsed politician answers.

He made eye contact.
He listened.
He answered questions directly.
He spoke openly and honestly with people in the room, including local veterans.

Whether you agree with someone politically or not, that kind of interaction still matters.

One thing we appreciated was that he didn’t act “above” anyone. He came across as approachable, genuine, attentive, and willing to have real conversations instead of simply talking at people.

And being local matters too.

As veterans, we believe it’s important for Americans to stay informed, ask questions, think independently, and actually engage with the people asking to represent them.

Too many men and women fought and died for our right to vote for us to sit on the sidelines and ignore it.

Florida’s August primary election is approaching, and early voting is available.

No matter who you support:
Do your homework.
Ask questions.
Listen carefully.
Think for yourself.
And vote.
