We ensure that all contributions are 100% tax-deductible in the U.S. and select countires, directly funding our mission to clean and preserve the marine environment. Our Foundation focuses exclusively on partnering with local captains and crews to clean plastic and trash from our ocean and creating educational campaigns that expand awareness.

4ocean Foundation was established as a separate entity from the 4ocean Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), our for-profit counterpart. This strategic move was made to expand our impact on ocean conservation by accessing diverse streams of capital and philanthropy. Why We Clean:
Our lives are deeply connected to the ocean, it is one of the most vital ecosystems on Earth. Covering more than 70% of the planet’s surface, the ocean generates a significant portion of the oxygen we breathe and sustains countless forms of life. It's where we work, unwind, connect with nature, and feel truly alive. Plastic pollution is a dual threat. Existing plastic is a significant threat to marine life and ecosystems however, when plastic photodegrades (breaks down) one plastic water bottle can turn into millions of pieces of microplastic. Microplastic pollution is exponentially threatening the health of every living being on our planet. Seeing our ocean, rivers, and coastlines polluted with plastic, wildlife struggling to survive, and communities losing their livelihoods - that’s what fuels our mission. This is a river boom in action along the Ijo Gading River in Bali.

By creating a single collection point instead of endless stops downstream, it turns a full day of work into just a few hours. These systems have the power to genuinely change the future of a river and ultimately the ocean. When regularly monitored, river booms are one of the most effective tools we have for stopping waste before it ever gets to the ocean.

Recently, the Bali crew removed a massive ghost net from a fragile coral reef. One of the largest they’ve seen.

Entangled in coral and threatening marine life, the net had become part of the growing crisis facing our ocean. The moment it was finally freed from the reef captured the attention of people around the world.

Today, that story comes full circle. Instead of becoming waste, the recovered net was cleaned, repaired, and transformed into a river boom designed to intercept plastic pollution before it reaches the ocean.

What was once harming marine life is now helping protect it.

Installed across a local waterway, the boom now works around the clock to capture floating debris and prevent it from breaking down into harmful microplastics.

From removal to restoration, this transformation is a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of our Bali crew. Together, we're proving that even the most destructive forms of plastic pollution can become part of the solution💙

Last month, in May, 4ocean Foundation crews throughout Bali showed up and refused to quit, wrapping up 844 cleanups and lifting 475,027 pounds of trash out of rivers, coastlines, and the ocean. To put that into perspective, that is the equivalent of 22.8 million plastic water bottles recovered in just 30 days.

Since launching our nonprofit impact program in 2025, that same relentless commitment has brought the total to 5,868,374 pounds of waste pulled from Bali's waters and shores alone. Every single one of those pounds represents a crew member who stepped in, got their hands dirty, and chose not to look away. The ocean isn't waiting for a better time, and neither are we, because waste left behind is waste that never had to be there.

And the work is not stopping. June is World Ocean Month, and these crews are already in the field, on coastlines and recovery vessels, the booms are stretched across the rivers, and the momentum is only building. You may remember the massive 1+ ton ghost net our crew recently pulled from the ocean. That net is getting a second chance. Instead of drifting through the ocean and trapping marine life, it will be turned into a river boom, used to catch waste floating downstream before it ever reaches the sea.

The crew started by cleaning the netting and sorting through it to find the best sections. Any holes were sewn up and damaged areas were repaired until the material was ready to use. Then, using ropes and buoys collected from other cleanups, they rigged the boom so the top sits right at the water's surface, making sure nothing can float past.

What was once causing harm will now help stop it.

The journey of this massive ghost net the Bali team recently recovered is far from over.

Once hauled aboard, the netting was loaded onto a truck and brought to a local processing area, the beginning of its second life. Much of it was still intact, making it perfect for transformation into a new river boom system: a floating barrier designed to intercept waste before it ever reaches the ocean.

This World Ocean Day, we're celebrating what's possible when we reimagine partnerships united through hope.

That spirit was on full display last Saturday in Nusa Penida, Bali, where 4ocean Foundation captains and crews joined Mission Blue , founded by legendary oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, and Hope Spot Champion, Coral Triangle Center , for a collaborative cleanup in one of the world's most important marine ecosystems.

Located in the heart of the Coral Triangle, Nusa Penida is both a Marine Protected Area and a Mission Blue Hope Spot, home to manta rays, sea turtles, and thriving coral reefs. Yet even places as extraordinary as this are not immune to plastic pollution.

By bringing together Hope Spot Champions, local communities, frontline cleanup crews, and global conservation partners, we can protect the ocean's most vital ecosystems from plastic pollution while inspiring action rooted in hope, shared responsibility, and a belief that meaningful change is possible. As we celebrate World Ocean Day, we're also excited to share that a short film documenting this special day, the direct impact of the cleanup, and the incredible individuals and organizations who made it possible will be released later this month.

The story of the massive ghost net 4ocean Foundation Bali crews removed on May 5th isn't over yet.

Two weeks later, a new report came in: more ghost net sightings along the beaches of Menjangan Island. The crews that hauled nearly a ton of netting from the seafloor answered the call again, this time rigging a pulley system aboard our specialized open ocean vessel, the Dugong, to lift the tangled mass out of the water. Within about an hour, all of the netting was pulled free, never to harm wildlife ever again.

But here's what makes this story different: that netting isn't heading to a landfill.

Just another beautiful day of locals doing what they love most, surfing, walking the shoreline, and soaking in the view. The beach is not only a critical habitat for dozens of wildlife species, it’s also a place where people come to breathe and reset - that's exactly why we show up for it.

This World Ocean Month, 4ocean Foundation is proud to partner with Mission Blue and the Coral Triangle Center to protect the Nusa Penida Hope Spot in Bali, Indonesia 🌊

At a time when our ocean needs more than awareness alone, this partnership reflects the power of collective action rooted in hope, community, and shared responsibility.

Recently, our crews had the honor of visiting the Coral Triangle Center and witnessing firsthand the incredible work being done to protect one of the world’s most important marine ecosystems. It’s safe to say this is just the beginning.

On June 6, ahead of World Ocean Day, our organizations will join local community members and volunteers for a large-scale cleanup at the Hope Spot, demonstrating the power of partnership and collective action in protecting the ocean.

Throughout the month of June, follow along as we share stories from the frontlines of conservation and explore what it means to reimagine hope, collaboration, and ocean action for the future of our blue planet.
