“Never tell anyone about this.”

Those words did not come from a stranger.

They came from the agent who had been managing John C. McGinley’s career for years.

In 1997, his son, Max, was born with Down syndrome.

The advice he received was simple.

Hide it.

Don’t bring it into the public eye.

If people found out, your career could be over.

John didn’t argue.

He fired his agent that very day.

Then he did something that many people considered risky.

He brought Max with him wherever he went.

To filming locations.

To television appearances.

To red carpet events.

He refused to treat his son like a secret that needed to be hidden.

At a time when many people still believed that individuals with Down syndrome should remain behind closed doors...

John chose to let the world see his son.

Not to be pitied.

But to be known.

The fight didn’t stop in front of the camera.

For years, he spoke at various forums, testified before Congress, and pushed for change so that people with disabilities could have opportunities to work and live independently.

One day, a journalist asked him,

“Have you ever wished your son had been born typical?”

John simply replied,

“Max is normal.

The question is not.”

Today, Max is an adult.

He works.

He lives independently.

He is living a life that many once thought was impossible.

John later said something he would never forget:

“Max never limited my life.

Instead, Max expanded my life.”
