Jesse Spina started Jesse’s Wish when he was 13 years old undergoing his second year of cancer treatment for Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. He hosted blood and bone marrow drives in our local community to bring about awareness for donors to go on the national registry in order to increase his friends’ chance of finding a perfect match. Two drives were held before Jesse relapsed and was unabl
e to continue hosting drives. His efforts became his legacy. His family in conjunction with The New York Blood Center and Be The Match-The National Marrow Donor Program continued hosting the drives. Over 1200 people joined the registry at Jesse’s Wish Drives where at least 10 good matches were identified that we had learned of, yet hopefully there were many more. In 2016 an estimated combined total of 171,550 people in the United States will be diagnosed with a blood cancer, one person every three minutes! Your blood and bone marrow donation is critical! There is only a 1 in 4 chance that your family member will be a match for a bone marrow transplant. About 70%, or 7 out of 10 patients who need a transplant do not have a suitable donor in their family. The Sacred Ripple was written by Jesse's mom as a labor of love recalling how God was ever so present in the midst of Jesse’s three-year ordeal and how He worked bringing people and healing into my life after Jesse’s home going. With your help and all of the book’s proceeds, Jesse’s Wish will expand it’s effort to help children with cancer and their families by giving them encouragement and available financial support. Jesse’s Wish support may range from purchasing a gift for the child, admission ticket to parks and events for the child, purchasing gift cards for wigs or clothing, paying a household bill for the family, an insurance co-pay, specific treatment or medical expense not covered by insurance, providing groceries or a gift card to a restaurant, transportation to/from treatment, childcare or activity cost for young siblings, and lodging near the hospital if places such as The Ronald McDonald House are not available. Jesses Wish is currently bringing gift cards, toys and crafts to local hospitals and Ronald McDonald houses in the South Carolina/Georgia area, New York City RMHC and Virginia. We continue to mail donations and gift cards to Philadelphia and New Jersey children’s oncology hospitals. Jesse’s Wish is a public charity registered in New Jersey, exempt from federal income tax and can receive tax-deductible donations under section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
