🚨 **WE'RE DONE SUGARCOATING IT.** 🚨

This is from a real surrender ask.
**“Unfortunately, due to a change in landlord restrictions as well as my husband and I expecting a baby, we’re having to re-home our sweet fur baby. … We’re trying to avoid taking her to the pound if at all possible. We’d really love for her to find a good, safe, happy home with no risk of euthanasia 😅💕🐾”**

Read that last bit again. *“No risk of euthanasia 😅.”* We're struggling to find anything funny about that.

There is something profoundly broken about casually asking an overwhelmed rescue to guarantee that your dog won't die after you've decided she can no longer be part of your life.

And before anyone starts: yes, landlord restrictions can create very real problems but “we're having a baby” should not be casually sitting on the list of reasons your dog has to go.

Your dog is not your **practice family** until the baby arrives and doesn't become disposable when you become pregnant.

Here's what people seem to think happens:
You surrender your dog. A rescue swoops in. A foster magically appears.
Someone adopts her immediately. Everyone lives happily ever after. 💕

**That is not the reality in 2026.**

Rescues & shelters are overflowing. Adoptions are slow. Foster homes are exhausted. Wonderful dogs are waiting MONTHS, even years, for homes.

So when you say, “We don't want to take her to the pound because she might be euthanized,” what you're actually saying is: *We understand our decision puts our dog at risk of dying, so we'd like you to absorb that risk.*

Someone else should open their home, pay for her care, find her a family, and carry the emotional burden if there isn't anywhere for her to go.

**No.** Find the pet-friendly housing. Talk to your landlord. Ask for temporary help. Hire the trainer. Walk the dog while you're tired. Prepare your dog for the baby. Change your routine. **You made a commitment to a living animal.**

Sometimes surrender truly is unavoidable. We know that but surrender should be the **last option after you've fought like hell to keep your commitment**, not the convenient solution when your life enters a new chapter.

Your dog doesn't understand why the person who called her their “fur baby” suddenly doesn't have room when a human baby came along. She only knows **her family disappeared.** And there is absolutely nothing 😅 about that.

**Do better.**

🖤🐾 Meet Winnie! 🐾🖤

This beautiful 6-year-old black Shar-Pei is one special girl! Winnie may be 6, but don’t tell her that—she has the energy and playful spirit of a puppy! 😍

She loves walks, playing in the yard, learning new things, and spending time with her people. She’s eager to please, knows commands like “heel” and “watch me,” and is both house- and crate-trained.

Winnie has been friendly with dogs of all sizes at daycare, so a playful canine companion could be a wonderful match for her. She’s curious about cats but hasn’t lived with them. She’s also been gentle around babies and has shown friendly interest in older children, although she hasn’t had direct interaction with them.

Winnie does have some food sensitivities and needs to stay on her prescribed hydrolyzed diet. She also has some resource guarding around food, so she needs a family who understands the importance of giving her space and leaving her undisturbed while she eats.

What Winnie really needs is a family who will keep her active, continue helping her learn, and love her for the sweet, spirited girl she is. ❤️

If you’re looking for a fun-loving companion with plenty of personality and a whole lot of love to give, Winnie may be your girl! 🐾🖤 https://www.dixiegirldogrescue.org/forms

Meet Cali, a one-year-old lab mix with an extremely gentle disposition who is looking for a forever family with another dog to be her best friend.

Born to a feral mom, Cali and her siblings spent the first couple of months of their lives without much human interaction. Cali has truly blossomed during the last year in her foster home. She is calm, super easy and extremely loyal. Cali can still be a little shy meeting new people, but she’s the most loving companion once she gets to know you.

Cali depends on the other dogs in her foster home, and she would do best with at least one other dog in her future forever home. She also needs a fenced yard to keep her safe. Cali doesn’t really enjoy walks, so her forever family doesn’t need to be active.

Cali is a small to medium girl, weighing just 33 lbs full grown. She is fully potty trained and uses the doggy door at her foster home. She loves sleeping in the human bed at night, usually up by the pillows, and often sleeps next to the children in her foster home. She’s wonderful with kids and loves to cuddle.

Cali will need a patient family who is willing to give her time to adjust to a new home. But for the lucky family that gets to adopt her, Cali will be a loyal and loving companion.

💜Lavender
Lavender is an adult Pittie girl. She is a happy, fun girl who enjoys playing with the other puppies in her foster home, snuggling with her humans and napping 💤 Lavender’s favorite things are dinner, her toys and treats. 🤣

She is a smart cookie who has mastered crate training and is doing great with house training.
Her foster mom describes Lavey as being laidback, a little shy and as sweet as pie! 💕
She is great with the older children in her foster home and would make a wonderful family dog or companion.

If this little beauty sounds perfect for your family, please submit the adoption application. Lavender can’t wait to start her new life with her forever family. 🎉

Meet Meri, a one-year-old terrier mix who zooms through life with great joy and impressive speed despite only having three legs.

Meri broke her front leg at just four months old and had to have it amputated. But Meri is determined and resilient — she lets nothing stop her.

Meri is as fast, if not faster, than all of her doggy friends. Her foster mom often refers to her as a torpedo. She goes up and down stairs effortlessly. Her favorite hobby is playing fetch, and she is insanely good at it. She brings the ball or frisbee back every single time.

Bring out the hose and Meri is ready to be hosed down. She hops on her two back legs and tries to catch all the water in her mouth.

Meri plays hard during the day and then puts herself to bed by going in her crate around 6 p.m. every night. Meri is crate trained and fully potty trained. She’s about 45 lbs and almost fully grown.

Meri’s ideal home would have at least one other dog. Meri has absolutely adored other dogs since she was a tiny puppy.

Meri is the typical overly affectionate pit bull. She loves cuddling and kissing other dogs and her humans. Meri’s one flaw is she can be skeptical of humans she doesn’t know. It usually involves barking. But once she gets to know visitors on her terms, she becomes loving and affectionate towards them too. It just takes some time and patience.

She is truly special, but not special needs. She can do all the things any other four-legged dog could do, and her setbacks have never once dampened her joyful spirit.

🌈🐾 **Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day** 🐾🌈

Today, we remember the ones we couldn't save, the ones we loved through their final days, and the beloved rescue dogs who found their families but simply didn't get enough time with them.

Rescue means opening our hearts knowing that sometimes, they'll eventually break.

Each of these dogs left a mark on Dixie Girl and on the people who loved them. They were more than a name on an intake form, a foster, or an adoption story.

**They were loved. They mattered. And they are remembered.** ❤️

Today we're holding them, and every beloved pet waiting at the Rainbow Bridge, a little closer in our hearts.

Feel free to share a photo or memory of a pet you're missing today. 🌈🐾

Meet Cooper, a Rottweiler mix who is the epitome of a true gentleman!

Calm and well-mannered, Cooper is still under a year old but has the maturity level of a much older dog. He politely says hello to new people with no jumping, and he greets new dogs with a calmness that immediately puts them at ease.

It doesn’t get any easier than Cooper. He’s crate trained, potty trained and walks perfectly on a leash. It’s as if he’s had years of leash training, but in reality, he’s just a natural. He walks right beside you, never pulling or reacting to anything around him.

Cooper was approximately 8 months old as of June 1. A breed test done on Cooper’s sister showed that the litter is half Rottweiler and the other half is a combination of Siberian Husky, American Pit Bull Terrier and Golden Retriever. Cooper will likely be a sizable dog when full grown, possibly around 80 lbs, give or take.

Cooper is incredibly good with other dogs and currently attends day care where he is always making new friends. He also adores kids, and immediately lays down for belly rubs in their presence.

It doesn’t take much to wear Cooper out. In his future forever home, he would love to cuddle on the couch with you after a leisurely morning stroll. He loves to be near his people.

Cooper is an easygoing, practically perfect dog who deserves the best forever home. Please apply today if he would be a cherished addition to your family.
