Urban League of Alabama Empowering Communities and Changing Lives.

10/26/2026

When the community comes together, Birmingham wins. The Urban League of Alabama was a proud partner with Safe Summer Series to help bring a free night of music, connection, and celebration of Birmingham.

Partnerships like these show what's possible when organizations share a commitment to strengthening our communities and creating meaningful experiences for residents.

Thank you to our partners and everyone who helped make this Magic City kickoff possible!

Selma, we’ve been meaning to talk. 👀🎩

If your average day involves running the business, leading the team, finding the funding, answering the emails, making the decisions AND figuring out whatever problem showed up five minutes ago…

For generations, Black men have been told their votes don't matter, even as laws, intimidation, and discriminatory practices were used to keep Black Americans from the ballot box.

Elections influence decisions about education, housing, public safety, healthcare, and economic opportunity. But voting alone doesn't guarantee better outcomes. Civic engagement also means staying informed, holding elected officials accountable, and continuing to advocate for our communities long after Election Day.

On October 24, the Urban League of Alabama recognizes National Black Man Voter Day, an initiative encourages civic participation and celebrates the role of Black men in shaping our democracy.

The conversation doesn't end at the ballot box. That's one part of a much larger responsibility we share in building the communities we want to see.

When should a community reach out for violence intervention support? The answer shouldn’t begin only after a crisis has already happened.

Community Violence Intervention (CVI) is rooted in the understanding that preventing violence requires more than reacting to individual incidents. It means recognizing when conflict is escalating, understanding the conditions that can place people at greater risk, and connecting communities with the right support before situations become even more difficult.

That work also requires trust. Effective intervention depends on relationships, communication, and people who understand the communities they serve. Knowing when to reach out can be just as important as knowing who to call.
In this conversation, we take a closer look at when CVI should become part of the response and why early intervention matters in creating safer, stronger communities.

We had such a great time last night at the Safe Summer Concert Series!

There is something powerful about seeing our community come together in a safe, positive environment. We’re grateful to partner with organizations and leaders who are committed to reducing community violence and creating more opportunities for Birmingham families.

It was great to see so many residents, elected officials and community leaders showing up, celebrating together and supporting the work happening across our city.

This is what community looks like. A time was definitely had, and we’re proud to continue doing the work to help make Birmingham safer.

As we close out the month, we're reminded that meaningful change doesn't happen overnight—it happens through consistent action, strong partnerships, and a shared commitment to our communities.

Throughout August, the Urban League of Alabama has continued working alongside residents, community leaders, and local partners to expand opportunities, prevent violence, and strengthen neighborhoods across our state.

While there's still work to do, every conversation, every partnership, and every life impacted brings us one step closer to a safer, more equitable Alabama.

Thank you to everyone who continues to stand with us and believe in the power of community.

Together, we'll keep moving forward.
