South Hills Interfaith Movement - SHIM Together, with teams of dedicated volunteers, donors and partners, we’re working to reduce the devastating effects of suburban poverty in the South Hills.

Born nearly fifty years ago as South Hills Interfaith Ministries by, no kidding, a priest, a rabbi and a minister, SHIM has been providing food, clothing and services to people in need in Pittsburgh’s southern suburban neighborhoods ever since. Faced with unprecedented new levels of suburban poverty, SHIM is expanding its work to include more neighbors helping more neighbors in need. Together, wit

h teams of dedicated volunteers, donors and partners, we’re working to reduce the devastating effects of suburban poverty among the working poor, unemployed, families, single parents, senior citizens, women, and the high concentration of refugee families in our service area.

🌞 Summer Hunger doesn't take a vacation.

When school is out, many families lose access to school meals and turn to local food pantries for help. That's why our Summer Hunger Campaign is so important—and thanks to generous sponsors like Community Bank, gifts go even further!

We've unlocked a generous gift of $5,000 but rising needs in our community mean we still need help supporting neighbors facing food insecurity this summer.

Your financial donation has incredible impact. Through our partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, SHIM has approximately 500% buying power, allowing us to purchase nutritious food at a fraction of retail cost. In other words, your gift stretches much farther than a trip to the grocery store.

Thank you to Community Bank for standing with our community and helping ensure local children, families, and seniors have access to healthy food when they need it most. Make your gift today and help us turn every dollar into even more meals for our neighbors: www.shimcares.org/summer-hunger.

Today, we honor Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrates freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equity and justice.

At SHIM, we recognize the importance of reflecting on our shared history while continuing to build stronger, more inclusive communities where all neighbors can thrive.

In observance of Juneteenth, SHIM offices will be closed on Friday, June 19. If you need help today, please call 2-1-1.

Did you know that SHIM helps clients navigate utility assistance programs?

During the summer months, higher temperatures often lead to higher energy bills, creating additional financial stress for many households. ☀️💦⚡️

Our Service Coordinators work with clients to identify customer assistance programs, enroll in available benefits, and connect families with resources that can help them manage utility costs while staying safe and comfortable at home.

Helping neighbors access the support they're eligible for is just one of the many ways SHIM promotes stability and self-sufficiency throughout our community. 😊Learn more at https://bit.ly/3qBLxOe.

We're halfway through June, but we're not yet halfway to our Summer Hunger Campaign goal.

Thanks to generous sponsors including Edgar Snyder & Associates, every gift is being matched dollar-for-dollar up to $5,000—but we need your help to unlock the full match and ensure local children have access to nutritious food all summer long. 🥦🍓

When school is out, many families lose access to the meals their children count on during the school year. For too many kids in our neighborhoods, summer can mean increased food insecurity and difficult choices for their families.

Your donation today can go twice as far to help provide groceries, fresh food, and support to families facing hunger. Please help us reach our goal and make sure no child in our community goes hungry this summer.

Give today and double your impact: www.shimcares.org/summer-hunger.

As our summer camp kicked off this week, this article really resonated with us.

A new Allegheny County study found that while families are highly satisfied with summer programs, too many children are still missing out because of barriers like cost, transportation, and limited availability. Parents of children who attend summer programs report overwhelmingly positive experiences, but thousands of local families are struggling to access those opportunities.

At SHIM, we see these challenges firsthand. Families want safe, enriching places for their children to learn, grow, build confidence, and stay engaged during the summer. As we welcome campers this week, we're grateful to be part of a community working to make summer experiences more accessible for all children and families. 😀

A new study finds that while Allegheny County families are pleased with the enrichment their children get through summer programs, there’s an unmet need for those opportunities. Two in five Allegheny County children whose parents want structured, summer learning programs for them are missing o...

It starts with a seed and a lot of helping hands 🌼

Thanks to volunteers and partners, our community gardens are already growing fresh produce for families, but we need more help!

We're looking for volunteers to join us at SHIM's Peace and Community Garden in Whitehall. The garden provides a welcoming space for neighbors to connect and grow together.

Volunteers meet on Saturday mornings to help with planting, weeding, harvesting, and general garden care. Whether you're an experienced gardener or just want to spend some time outdoors and learn something new, we'd love to have you join us. 🌱

Come help us grow fresh food and stronger communities! Sign up at www.shimcares.org/volunteer.
