Thanks to Church Grove UMC for their generous $20,000 donation this past Sunday, during their final service!

Here is a word from pastor, Samantha Johnson Hall:
Church Grove United Methodist Church, 2656 Main Street in Benton, was formed the same year that the Civil War began, 1861. Since this time, many people in Marshall County have experienced God’s love, healing, grace, and mercy through the ministries of Church Grove. However, during the past few years, the congregation began to decline due mostly to the deaths and health challenges of our faithful servants. It became evident last year that the church needed to make a choice. It could remain open and use the money they had until there was no more money left, or it could close and donate the money to be used to support other missional activities within the community. After much prayer and discernment, the people decided to choose the latter. On May 24, 2026, the congregation donated $20,000 to the Murray State University Wesley Foundation which will be used to build future leaders in the United Methodist Church and beyond. On May 31, 2026, during the final service, the 72nd pastor in their
history, Samantha Hall, and the Purchase District UMC Superintendent, Nancy Johnston Varden, presided at the closing service. During this time, Church Grove was able to provide support to several community non-profit organizations, including
Third Place Ministries. Through our Connectional ministries within the United MethodistChurch, Third Place helps with utilities, radio ministry, and a laundry ministry as well as a scholarship for Marshall County High School seniors. A twenty-thousand-dollar check
was presented to Lisa Cheek Sills, executive director, and Dennis Burkeen, board treasurer in front of nearly 100 attendees. Though this congregation will no longer serve at this church building, Church Grove’s legacy will remain in Marshall County and beyond because of their generosity. Seeds have been planted and will be harvested for the Kingdom of God.

Third Place Ministries is thrilled to recognize Emma Roberts and Anna Waters as the 2026 recipients of the Susan and David Atkinson Scholarship. $1000 checks were presented to the students last week to help further their education.
