Berrien Forward extends our heartfelt congratulations to Berrien County Commissioner and Benton Harbor Public Library Board President Mamie Yarbrough on the recent dedication of the Mamie L. Yarbrough Benton Harbor Public Library.

This well-deserved honor recognizes her decades of leadership, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to education, literacy, and community development. This year, Berrien Forward was proud to have Tyler Laske serve as a Campus Organizer through our Engage Program.

Tyler played an important role in helping students get involved and make their voices heard across campus communities in Southwest Michigan. Through his outreach and leadership, he helped register 60 students to vote, secured 125 student voter pledges and engaged 400+ students while working with us.

At Berrien Forward, we believe young people care deeply about their communities. The Engage Program is about showing up consistently, building relationships, and investing in students as leaders, not just during election season, but year-round.

Thank you, Tyler, for your hard work and commitment to civic engagement across Berrien County.

Berrien Forward had an eventful Saturday as we joined the community ahead of this year’s Blossomtime Parade. Our Executive Director Chokwe Pitchford, alongside Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, spent time walking through Downtown Benton Harbor, connecting with residents, and hearing directly about the issues that matter most to them.

From meaningful conversations to celebrating community spirit, it was a great opportunity to engage with families, local leaders, and neighbors from across Southwest Michigan. Thank you to everyone who stopped to talk with us and helped make the day special.

Today Berrien Forward welcomed leaders, workers, union representatives, community advocates, and residents from across Southwest Michigan for our Berrien Forward Third Annual Labor Summit.

Throughout the day, meaningful conversations took place surrounding workforce development, economic opportunity, labor rights, and the future of working families in our region. The summit created space for community voices to be heard directly by elected officials, and labor leaders committed to engaging in real dialogue.

We are grateful to every speaker, attendee, volunteer, and partner who helped make this event impactful. The conversations started today are an important step toward building stronger communities and a more just economy for working people across Southwest Michigan.
