Did you know that Sarett is home to a unique type of wetland called a fen?

Fens are very special open meadows that are fed by groundwater springs. The water can come from water deep underground in the aquifers. As the water gets pushed up, it passes through a calcium rich layer making the soil pH slightly alkaline, thereby making fens home to some unique plants and animals.

This time of year, our fen loop off the River Trail is a mélange of interesting wetland wildflowers: Swamp-betony, Grass of Parnassus, Lady's Tresses, Purple Fringed Orchid, Swamp Thistle, Boneset, Joe-pye W**d, Great Blue Lobelia, and Goldenrod can all be found, plus more.

Come enjoy a walk to see these late season blooms!

During the month of August, the most noticeable sound of nature is the buzzing song of cicadas. Their song is most noticeable during the hottest part of the day. The singing is done by males to attract a mate and is accomplished using a specialized organ located in the abdomen.

The life cycle involves a number of years spent underground as a juvenile, and then only a few weeks in the tree canopy as adults. Both juveniles and adults eat tree sap. Exoskeletons of the juveniles can be found clinging to trees and man-made objects. Adults split the middle of the exoskeleton and emerge leaving the empty skin behind (pictured).

Meet nature's ultimate angler -- the Osprey! Unlike hawks and eagles, live fish make up over 99% of an Osprey's diet!

Here are some adaptations that Ospreys have developed to make them expert fish hunters:

1) Reversible Toes: Unlike most birds of prey that have three toes forward and one back, Ospreys can rotate their outer toe backward. This gives them a two-and-two grip to lock down slippery fish.

2) Barbed Soles: The undersides of their toes are covered in tiny spike-like scales called spicules, acting like built-in sandpaper for non-slip control.

3) Built-in Goggles: They possess a transparent third eyelid (called a nictitating membrane) that closes over their eyes during high-impact, headfirst, water dives.

4) Aerodynamic Carry: Once they catch a fish, they almost always turn it head-first in mid-air to minimize wind resistance while flying back to the nest.
