This photo was taken on a family trip to Chelan — Maddy giving her little brother a hug.
Today, because of Spencer’s decision to be an organ and tissue donor, two people have the gift of sight.
The chance to see the faces they love. Sunsets. Family moments. The everyday things we so easily take for granted.
What an incredible part of Spencer’s legacy.

Organ and tissue donation isn't only about saving lives. Sometimes, it's about helping someone get back to living theirs.
Through tissue donation, one of Spencer's gifts helped someone return to the sport they loved.
We love thinking about that.
Spencer spent so much of his life on a field, back in the youth days as #77 — playing, competing, coaching and surrounded by teammates. Knowing that one of his final gifts helped someone else continue doing something they love feels especially meaningful to us.
Donation can mean another birthday, another walk, another game, another moment with the people you love.

A PLACE TO BELONG 💙🥍
This is where it started.
The Warriors — the first youth lacrosse team in University Place. The program would eventually become UP Vikings Lacrosse, but back then, it was simply a group of kids — and volunteer coaches — learning the game together.
We thought we were signing Spencer up to play a sport.
We had no idea what would come with it.
The friendships. The coaches. The memories. The families. A place to belong.
Spencer played a lot of sports, but lacrosse became the one he loved most. Looking back, some of the greatest gifts weren't the wins or the games. They were the people beside him.
Those early players, coaches, and families helped build the incredible lacrosse community we have in UP today — and it's one of the reasons youth sports are so important to us at SDLF.
We want more kids to have the chance to play, find their people, and belong. 💙🥍

SPENCER + DAD ❤️

There was something so special about the relationship between Spencer and his dad.

They looked up to each other. They were proud of each other. And in so many ways, they were each other’s heroes.

Spencer admired his dad’s strength, his loyalty, and the way he always showed up for his family. And Rob saw so much in Spencer—the size of his heart, the way he stood up for others, his determination, and the man he was becoming.

There was plenty of teasing, plenty of laughter, and probably a little stubbornness on both sides. But underneath it all was a bond built on an incredible amount of love and respect.

Father and son.
Best buddies.
Each other’s heroes.

Spencer started playing sports when he was little. Like so many parents, we signed him up hoping he would have fun, learn something new, and be part of a team.
What we didn’t know then was just how much those early years in sports would shape his life. ❤️
This photo is from flag football camp, where Spencer proudly received a Merit Award. Somewhere on those same fields were kids who would eventually become some of his best friends — including Luke Purcella.
At the time, they were just kids playing a game. We had no idea how many practices, games, seasons, laughs, and years of friendship would grow from those early days.
Sports gave Spencer so much more than a game to play. They gave him connection, belonging, teammates, coaches, and friendships that became such an important part of his life.
And that is a big part of why youth sports are at the heart of SDLF. One of our goals is to provide scholarships for several young athletes each year, helping give more kids the opportunity to play — regardless of their family's ability to afford the cost.
Because you never really know what can begin when a child steps onto a field.
A love for the game. A sense of belonging. A best friend. A lifetime of memories. đź’™
We want more kids to have that chance — in Spencer’s name.

This photo is from one of Spencer’s summer tournament teams. And if you look closely at his chin strap, you’ll see two little letters: LB.
Those initials were for his Grammy, Lois Bowman.
Spencer loved his Grammy deeply, and after she passed, he found his own quiet way to carry her with him. He wore “LB” on his chin strap whenever he played—and continued to do so through the years.
It was such a small detail that said so much about who Spencer was. He loved fiercely. He remembered the people who mattered to him. And even when they were no longer physically beside him, he found ways to keep them close.
Long before we understood what it would mean to carry his memory forward, Spencer was already showing us how you honor someone you love. ❤️

Best friends since grade school. Teammates who went on to play four years of varsity lacrosse together for the Curtis Vikings.
This photo was taken after a playoff win their sophomore year—and it captures so much of what friendship and being part of a team meant to Spencer.
He had a huge heart, on and off the field. He lifted his teammates up, stood up for the underdog, made people feel included, and was fiercely loyal to the people he loved.
For Spencer, being a good teammate was about more than the game. It was about showing up for your people.
Years pass. Games end. But friendships like these—and the memories made along the way—stay with us forever. 💙

ONE YEAR OF SDLF đź’™
One year ago, the Spencer Durbin Legacy Foundation began with a group of family, friends, board members and volunteers who simply wanted to help us honor Spencer—and the incredibly special heart he had.
Spencer had a way of connecting with people. He loved big, cared deeply and made people feel like they mattered. And somehow, that same heart has brought this group of people together.
Over this first year, they have given so selflessly—their time, talents, ideas, energy, support and heart—to help turn our passion project into something that is making a difference.
Because of them, SDLF is helping kids get the opportunity to play sports, sharing the life-saving message of organ donation, and putting Naloxone into the hands of people who may one day use it to save a life.
And behind every event, there are people quietly making it all happen. They set up, organize, problem-solve, welcome guests, run tables, clean up and handle countless details—giving Rob and me the gift of being able to step away from the logistics and connect with people as Spencer’s mom and dad. That means more to us than we could ever adequately put into words.
This work is hard. It comes from a place we never imagined we would be. But it is also deeply meaningful.
To our board, volunteers, family, friends, sponsors and everyone who has believed in SDLF during this first year: thank you for choosing to walk this journey with us. Thank you for helping us carry Spencer’s heart forward.
We are just getting started.
Our hope is to continue creating projects, events and opportunities that reflect who Spencer was—his kindness, his loyalty, his love for the underdog, his generosity and, most of all, his heart.

THE BROTHER. đź’™
This photo was taken on one of the happiest days our family has ever known—Maddy’s wedding day. We had no idea that just over a month later, everything would change.
Maddy and Spencer had the kind of sibling bond that came with plenty of teasing, laughter, and stories—but underneath it all was a fierce love.
Spencer was incredibly protective of his sister. He would defend Maddy to the end. He never wanted to see her hurt, and when it came to the people he loved, he was all in. Family was everything to him.
Looking at this photo now, we see so much more than a brother standing beside his sister. We see his pride. His happiness. His love. And we remember how incredibly happy we all were that day.
These are the moments we hold onto. The ones that remind us just how deeply Spencer loved—and how deeply he is still loved. 💙
And that cowboy hat? 🤠 There’s a story behind it... along with the cowboy boots Kaleb picked out for the wedding party. That Spencer story is definitely one we’ll have to share soon.

This past weekend, we had the honor of celebrating Spencer at the LifeCenter Northwest Organ Donation Celebration. đź’š
It’s a day that holds both profound loss and incredible hope.
We heard firsthand from transplant recipients whose gifts have given them more birthdays, more time with family, and more chances to simply live life to the fullest.
As donor families, we understand the complicated beauty of holding grief and gratitude in the same heart. We carry the pain of losing someone we love beyond words, while knowing their gifts became hope, life, and more tomorrows for someone else.
We treasured reconnecting with other donor families and our friends at LifeCenter Northwest, who continue to support SDLF and help us keep Spencer’s legacy alive.
Forever proud of our donor hero. Spencer gave his whole heart—and his gifts continue to give. ❤️
