🦀 Become a Citizen Scientist and Help Protect Puget Sound!

Join the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group on June 17 for a hands-on training focused on monitoring invasive European green crabs throughout Hood Canal and Puget Sound.

European green crabs are one of the world's most invasive marine species and threaten Washington’s shellfish beds, eelgrass habitats, and native marine ecosystems. By learning to identify green crab molts and conduct shoreline surveys, you can play an important role in protecting our local waters.

📅 Date: June 17, 2026
⏰ Time: 12:00 PM–1:00 PM
📍 Location: Salmon Center

After the training, participants are invited to join an optional field trip to Belfair State Park to practice conducting green crab molt surveys in the field.

What you'll learn:
✔️ How to identify European green crab molts
✔️ Why invasive green crabs are a concern in Washington
✔️ Survey and data collection techniques
✔️ How community volunteers support ongoing monitoring efforts

No experience is necessary! Whether you're interested in marine science, conservation, shellfish protection, or giving back to your community, this training is a great opportunity to get involved.

🌊 If you plan to attend the field portion, please dress appropriately for beach conditions.

🚧Road Closure Ahead — Big Benefits for Fish!🐟

If you're traveling through Gorst this month, be aware that the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will close SR 3 near Sunnyslope Road from June 13–29 as part of its fish passage improvement project.

We know road closures can be frustrating, but projects like this create long-term benefits for salmon, and are critical for restoring healthy watersheds. When fish can move freely upstream and downstream, they gain access to the habitat they need to feed, grow, and reproduce—benefiting the entire ecosystem. WSDOT is conducting this work during a limited in-water work window when fewer fish are present and stream conditions are most suitable for construction.

Please review the map to plan for the future road closure, and learn more about the project here:
