ππ€ World Elder Abuse Awareness Day ππ€..
In South Carolina, thousands of vulnerable adults rely on our communities to recognize the signs of abuse, neglect, and exploitation and to speak up when something isn't right.
South Carolina by the numbers:
β’ The South Carolina Department of Social Services investigates thousands of reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation involving vulnerable adults each year.
β’ Research conducted with older adults in South Carolina found that 12.9% experienced emotional abuse, 6.6% experienced financial exploitation by a family member, and 5.4% faced potential neglect after the age of 60.
β’ Many cases of elder abuse go unreported due to fear, isolation, dependence on caregivers, or uncertainty about where to seek help.
β’ In South Carolina, suspected abuse of a vulnerable adult living in the community can be reported to Adult Protective Services at 1-888-CARE4US (1-888-227-3487).
Our elders have cared for families, built communities, and shared wisdom across generations. Protecting them is not only a responsibilityβit is an act of love and respect.
Today, let us commit to:
π Checking in on older loved ones
π Learning the warning signs of abuse and exploitation
π Supporting caregivers
π Speaking up when we suspect someone may be at risk
Because every older adult deserves to age with dignity, safety, and compassion.
