Today we received a nice message from one of our most loyal supporters: "Great Job cleaning up Pinconning Preserve Trail yesterday. Thanks for removing the fallen tree. Keep Enjoying Nature and Life!" It is Hoss Meier, our Stewardship Associate, who is responsible for keeping more than 600 acres and many miles of trails in more than ten locations maintained, safe, and open for everyone! Hoss joined us eight years ago, coming straight from a youth employment program in Saginaw with First Ward Community Service. We couldn't be more grateful to have him on our team! His hard work and careful stewardship keep nature close and accessible for everyone in our community!
Do you recognize the tall grass that Hoss is standing next to? It's Big Bluestem! This grass provides excellent habitat for a variety of species, including ground-nesting birds like Eastern Meadowlark and Bobolink. With a root system that can extend deeper into the ground than the plant itself can reach into the air, Big Bluestem is great at stabilizing soil and withstanding periods of dry weather. Native grasses, along with forb species, are an important part of native habitat restoration in the Saginaw Bay Watershed!
