Barrington Land Conservation Trust

Barrington Land Conservation Trust The Barrington Land Conservation Trust preserves natural open spaces. For more information, visit www.blct.org.

Founded by volunteers in 1979, the Barrington Land Conservation Trust has preserved hundreds of acres of natural open space in the town of Barrington, RI. The organization remains powered by volunteers who help us to fulfill all aspects of our mission: land preservation, land stewardship, education and advocacy. We offer volunteer programs for adults and for students age 14-18, as well as family p

rograms which allow young children to get involved. We offer outdoor environmental education programs in collaboration with the Barrington Public Schools, and we host an annual Learning Series in partnership with the Barrington Public Library featuring environmental experts, authors and artists.

Today, Jonathan Currie visited the Coastal Systems Program, SMAST laboratory to analyze the samples he collected for his senior project on Echo Lake in Barrington over the summer. JC collected water-quality samples to assess the lake’s overall health and habitat condition and today he got to see the project soup to nuts! All that is left is data analysis and finalizing the findings!!!

During his visit, JC processed dissolved oxygen samples using a benchtop titration system, filtered samples for chlorophyll-a and total pigments and ran them on a fluorometer and observed the laboratory methods used to determine total phosphorus using a spectrophotometer and total nitrogen using a Lachat auto-analyzer.

A full hands-on day in the lab and an exciting milestone in his senior project! Can’t wait to see the final product.

Great work by the Student Stewardship Team at Osamequin Nature Preserve yesterday! It would be great if people didn't dump their household trash in conservation areas... but these young people are helping to keep it clean.
