Dr. Ibram X. Kendi is perhaps the most high-profile thinker and writer on race issues today. Thanks to generous donors, he's coming to Barrington (virtually) on Monday, April 26. Don't miss it!

I can finally announce some very exciting news we've had to keep under wraps until everything was finalized... Thanks to support from Rhode Island Foundation, Barrington Public Library, and generous donors in the community, along with the work of Barrington's diversity consultant, Adam Mastoon, on April 26th, at 7:00pm, we'll be hosting a conversation with Ibram X. Kendi.

Professor Kendi is one of America’s foremost historians and leading antiracist scholars. He is a National Book Award-winning and #1 New York Times bestselling author of seven books. Kendi is the Founding Director of the Boston University Center for Antiracist Research.

Adam will "sit down" with Professor Kendi (via Zoom) for a conversation as part of Barrington's exploration in how we can move forward in the areas diversity, equity and inclusion.

The thing about white privilege is that it’s so easy to not realize you have it. That’s why there are so many white people in Barrington who are absolutely sure there’s no racism here. Here’s U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips recounting the moment he started to really understand. But it shouldn’t have to take a life-or-death situation for white folks to understand how different life still is for our neighbors of color. We can actively educate ourselves by reading, listening, attending workshops and *listening to people of color.*

“At some point,” Kendi says, “a generation has to decide, ‘We're going to be the generation that eliminates slavery.’ ‘We're going to be the generation that eliminates Jim Crow.’ ‘We're going to be the generation that eliminates racism.’” YES.

Racism asks who is at fault. Antiracism asks what system is at fault. Boston University scholar Ibram Kendi asks us to bridge that intellectual gap.
