A Meaningful Step Forward for Baraboo Area Fire & EMS

Following the approval of the 2027 Baraboo Area Fire & EMS District budget, IAFF Local 5429 would like to publicly recognize and thank our five member municipalities and District Commissioners for their continued support and commitment to our emergency services.

We recognize the difficult financial decisions involved and appreciate the collective effort that went into reaching this point. While financial challenges remain, the increased municipal commitment represents meaningful progress toward a more sustainable future for our District.

Our Local remains committed to continued collaboration, transparency, and community engagement as we work together to protect the emergency services our communities depend on.

The future of fire and emergency medical services in our communities is facing some difficult decisions, and the consequences extend well beyond numbers on a budget worksheet.

For months, IAFF Local 5429 has worked tirelessly to advocate for sustainable funding, adequate staffing, and the emergency response capabilities our communities depend on. The challenges facing our District are real, and they will not disappear simply by reducing a budget.

The public deserves to know what is at stake, what options are being considered, and what those decisions could mean when someone calls 911.

We encourage every resident, taxpayer, and elected official to join us Wednesday, October 21, for an open and honest conversation about the future of YOUR emergency services.

Bring your questions, challenge the information, and be part of the conversation. These decisions affect all of us.

Our community needs to pay attention tonight.

The future of Fire & EMS in Baraboo is being discussed, including potential changes to the City’s participation in BAFED. These decisions could fundamentally change how emergency services are delivered to our community.

Tonight's Common Council agenda includes a closed-session discussion regarding the “Future of the Fire and EMS District, Including Potential Changes to the City's Participation.”

Closed session may be appropriate for matters legally permitted to be discussed confidentially. But the ultimate policy decision about the future of our community's Fire & EMS system belongs in the light of day, with taxpayers informed about the options, costs, risks, and consequences.

Contact your elected officials. Demand transparency! Demand the alternative! Demand the facts!

Attend tonight's Baraboo Common Council meeting at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall, 101 South Blvd. The agenda provides an opportunity for citizens to speak on agenda items if recognized by the presiding officer.

Show up. Speak up. Let your elected officials know that the future of Fire & EMS is not something this community is willing to gamble with.

🚨 Baraboo Fire & Paramedics: EXTREME COLD ALERT! 🥶

The safety of our community is our top priority! We are issuing a crucial safety message regarding the extreme cold weather event heading our way.

A Cold Weather Advisory has been extended until 10 AM CST Sunday morning for the Madison to Milwaukee corridor and areas further north.

The Danger Zone:

• Extreme Wind Chills: Wind chill values are expected to plunge between -20°F and -30°F. Frostbite and hypothermia are serious risks.
• Timing: The absolute coldest conditions will be tonight into Saturday morning, and again Saturday evening into Sunday morning.

Our Firefighter Safety Checklist:
1. Protect Yourself: Limit all non-essential outdoor activity during these peak cold times. If you must go out, dress in multiple layers and ensure no skin is exposed.
2. Protect Your Home:
o Keep flammable materials (blankets, curtains) away from space heaters.
o Let faucets drip to prevent frozen pipes. Know where your water shut-off valve is!
3. Protect Others:
o Check on neighbors, especially the elderly. A quick phone call can save a life.
o Bring pets indoors.
4. Heating Safety: Never use a stove or oven to heat your home. Ensure you have working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, the silent killer, on every level of your home.

Stay warm, monitor local forecasts, and remember to check your CO detectors! We are here for you 24/7.
