🇲🇽 CENTERPIECE FRIDAY 🇵🇸

We've got two excellent feature-length films for you on Friday, June 26th, starting with Kunsang Kyirong's 100 SUNSET at 5PM, then our OFFICIAL RED CARPET at 6:30PM, followed by our centerpiece film, Colette Ghunim's TRACES OF HOME at 7:45PM, with a Q&A with the director, crew, and subject immediately after. 💪

We're not stopping there though—our official Centerpiece Corral Party happens after from 9:30 to midnight at and features light bites from , a paleta cart, and refreshments by and , all accompanied by a live DJ set by .a_2000... DONT MISS OUT 🕺

TRACES OF HOME
Filmmaker Colette Ghunim collages her parents’ histories of their homes in Mexico and Palestine. Ghunim’s camera intricately meditates the generational trauma and grief that bounds her family. TRACES OF HOME functions as a reminder that while "home" as a physical site may be eroded by geopolitical shifts or the passage of time, its essence persists and reconstructs within the daily rituals, emotional landscapes, and oral histories of the diaspora. A knockout debut feature that's as much an external quest as an internal one. 🏠

100 SUNSET
Teenaged introvert Kunsel (Tenzin Kunsel) lives in a Toronto apartment complex with her aunt and uncle, keeping insistently aloof from them and the rest of the local Tibetan community—which she prefers to surreptitiously view through a camcorder, scored in one of her many compulsive thefts. But Passang (Sonam Choekyi), a new arrival accompanied by her much older husband (Lobsang Tenzin), exercises a special fascination for Kunsel. The two young women bond and Kunsel is drawn ever deeper into the morass of Passang's life, including her troubled marriage and a risky scheme that might at last force Kunsel off the sidelines. An acutely-observed feature debut, 100 SUNSET looks past surveillance-thriller tropes towards an uncommon hybrid of social and psychological portraiture, grounded in concrete detail and lifted by free-floating suspense. 🌇

TIKTOK NEVER DIES
SXSW Grand Jury Prize winner for his 2018 feature PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF DESIRE, Hao Wu continues his examination of the digital apparatus with the most talked about app: TikTok. After TikTok faced a nationwide ban over security concerns, three TikTokers took action in the fight to court. The larger fight over political power, free speech, and people’s livelihood are all captured in a hysterical energy that matches the twists and turns in and out of the court. An essential documentary bound to spark many conversations with policymakers and children about who controls the narratives behind social media. 🤳

WINTER CEREMONY
In a Texas winter, a long-divorced Chinese couple reunites for their daughter’s college graduation. Days pass with small talk in quiet spaces, until they part again towards separate lives. 🏨

TAEMONG
A pregnant young woman buys a “Taemong” of peaches, a Korean conception dream, from her photographer. This symbolic dream is dreamt by the mother and signals the conception and destiny of the child. 🍑

HOW WE GRIEVE
A new traumedy docuseries hosted by two filmmakers (who happen to be siblings) exploring all the ways people grieve in order to process our own losses and fear of our turn in the urn. Follow along on this journey as we get people to talk about the stuff no one (especially our Arab family) wants to talk about. 🪦

FIREWALL
FIREWALL follows Ani, an Iranian-American girl in Texas longing for her father, lost and unreachable due to an internet firewall in politically turbulent Iran. When her father mysteriously returns, ancient Persian mythology intertwines with her reality, forcing her to confront the demons that have kept her from finding peace. 🔥🛜

CINDY TRAN: FROM HERE TO HERE
From family estrangement to New York City’s overlooked restaurants, Cindy Tran’s poems capture what’s hidden, honest, and beautiful about being human. She invites us into the in-between, where we embrace difficult experiences and reimagine the possibilities of poetry. 📖

🤘 Opening Night 🤘

Saddle up and join us at AFS Cinema on Weds 6/24 at 6:30PM for our opening night screening of Lilian T. Mehrel’s HONEYJOON preceded by Vaidaangi Sharma’s short film KUCHAR (THE ITCH). After a Q&A with director Mehrel, we’ll be headed over to Soupleaf Hot Pot for our opening night badgeholders afterparty featuring AYCE HOTPOT. 🎉

HONEYJOON:
Winner of the 2024 AT&T Untold Stories competition in collaboration with Tribeca, HONEYJOON is a hilarious, relatable, and bittersweet portrait of love and loss. Mother and daughter duo June (Ayden Mayeri) and Lela (Amira Casar) embark on a vacation together following the loss of a family member, only to discover that their expectations for the trip differ greatly from reality. With the help of a charming (and handsome) tour guide, both women begin to see each other and themselves in a new light as they navigate grief, tension, and the complicated process of moving forward. Featuring stunning scenery, a sharp script, and the emotional rollercoaster of mother-daughter dynamics, HONEYJOON will leave audiences feeling all the things. 🫂

KUCHAR (THE ITCH):
Kuchar is a coming-of-age tale that follows Chanda, who unexpectedly discovers ma********on on an otherwise ordinary day—set off by nothing more than the whirl of a washing machine. Unaware of what she’s experiencing or why, she clings to the sensation, setting off a quiet game of secrecy within the Indian milieu of Sharma household. But Chanda isn’t the only one keeping secrets. Priya, her strict and composed mother, has secrets of her own. As their unspoken struggles collide, mother and daughter find themselves on parallel paths of self-discovery—bridging the gap between them in ways they never expected. 🌀
