CAN A WOMAN PREACH?
Yes. The Bible clearly shows women proclaiming God’s message, testifying about Christ, prophesying, and teaching in certain contexts. However, Scripture also contains passages about the role of women in church authority, so it is important to distinguish proclaiming the gospel from questions about pastoral/elder authority.
📖 Women who proclaimed God’s message
1. The Samaritan woman — John 4:28–30, 39
After meeting Jesus, she went into the city and told the people about Him.
“Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did...” — John 4:29 KJV
Verse 39 says:
“And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman...” — John 4:39 KJV
She became a witness who brought others to Christ.
2. Mary Magdalene — John 20:17–18
After Jesus' resurrection, Jesus sent Mary to tell His disciples.
“...go to my brethren, and say unto them...” — John 20:17 KJV
Mary obeyed and announced the resurrection to the disciples.
3. Anna the prophetess — Luke 2:36–38
Anna worshiped God continually and spoke about Jesus to those waiting for redemption.
“...she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption...” — Luke 2:38 KJV
4. Priscilla — Acts 18:24–26
Priscilla, together with Aquila, took Apollos aside and explained the way of God more accurately.
“...they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.” — Acts 18:26 KJV
5. Philip’s four daughters — Acts 21:8–9
The Bible specifically says:
“...he had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy.” — Acts 21:9 KJV
6. Deborah — Judges 4:4–5
Deborah was a prophetess and judge of Israel. She delivered God's direction to Barak and Israel.
7. Huldah — 2 Kings 22:14–20
Huldah was a prophetess whose message from God was sought by the king's representatives. She delivered God's word concerning Judah.
🔥 Acts 2 is especially important
Peter quoted Joel:
“And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy...” — Acts 2:17 KJV
And:
“And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.” — Acts 2:18 KJV
So the Holy Spirit's empowering for proclamation and prophecy is not presented as exclusively male.
⚖️ But what about 1 Timothy 2:11–12?
This passage must also be taken seriously:
“Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man...” — 1 Timothy 2:11–12 KJV
And 1 Corinthians 14:34–35 is also part of the discussion.
Therefore, a balanced biblical conclusion is:
YES — women are shown in Scripture proclaiming Christ, testifying, prophesying, teaching in certain settings, and communicating God's message.
But whether Scripture permits women to hold pastoral/elder authority over a congregation is a separate theological question, especially because Christians interpret 1 Timothy 2:11–12 and 1 Corinthians 14:34–35 differently.
