$46,500. That's what we've spent on spay and neuter surgeries alone this year. And the year isn't over.

So far this year, DeKalb Humane Society has:

Taken in over 450 cats and dogs

Celebrated over 400 adoptions

Reunited countless lost pets with their families

Spent $46,500 on spay and neuter surgeries alone

Here's something many people don't realize: DeKalb Humane Society is a privately operated nonprofit shelter. We do not have a countywide contract.

We depend on donations, grants, fundraisers, and the generosity of our community to keep our doors open.

And that $46,500? It doesn't include emergency veterinary care, vaccinations, medications, food, litter, utilities, staffing, or the everyday expenses of caring for the animals who need us.

487 animals didn't get to choose whether they needed our help. But together, we can choose to be there for them.

We're proud of what we've accomplished, but the financial responsibility is enormous, and we cannot continue this work without community support.

‼️FOUND DOG‼️

This dog was wandering around CR 39 Auburn. Female, friendly no chip.

Finders held on to her but no one came for her. She is now at Dekalb Humane Society.

found dog in Avilla on Baum street. It is contained in her backyard.

finder stated it was south of Saint Joe. Female no chip no collar does appear that the collar was removed. The finder stated when he found her she was wrapped up in wire and he gave her a bath and cleaned her up. Please call 260-868-2409 extension 101 with any information.

Meet Artie ❤️

If you're looking for a best friend who's equal parts goofy, loving, adventurous, and adorable, Artie may just be your perfect match.

Artie came to DeKalb Humane Society from the amazing team at Shadarobah, who worked incredibly hard to help this sweet boy and give him the fresh start he deserves. He was transferred to DeKalb Humane Society in hopes of finding his perfect forever family, and we're excited to help him get there.

This handsome wire-haired mixed breed has the sweetest soul and a personality that shines once he gets comfortable. Artie loves spending time with his people, exploring the outdoors, running zoomies through the yard, and rolling dramatically in the dirt like it's his full-time job. He finds joy in the simple things—sunshine, fresh air, muddy paws, and a good belly rub.

While Artie is incredibly loving with the people he knows and trusts, he can be very nervous around new people and busy environments. Because of this, he would do best in a quieter, lower-traffic home where he can take his time getting comfortable. Artie isn't the type of dog who wants to meet every stranger right away—he prefers slow introductions and a chance to build trust at his own pace. Once he feels safe, his affectionate and playful personality truly shines.

Artie would thrive with a family who understands that not every dog is a social butterfly and is willing to help him navigate new situations with patience and encouragement. In return, you'll gain a loyal companion who forms deep bonds and loves wholeheartedly.

He also loves spending time outdoors and would be thrilled to have a family that enjoys adventures as much as he does. And while he may come home a little dusty from his explorations, that scruffy coat is part of his charm! Because of his unique wire-haired coat, Artie will need regular grooming or a family willing to keep up with his coat care to keep him comfortable and looking handsome.

There is a deceased black lab on the side of the road near CR 48 & CR 3. Officers could not locate the owner.
