Did you know that March 6, 1943 was a “black day“ for Red Oak, Iowa? Over 100 telegrams arrived on that date. One mother received three telegrams regarding two sons and a son-in-law. The first major battle in North Africa for American troops was in the Kasserine Pass in Tunisia. The casualty rate was stunning. Red Oak suffered a loss of 45 on that single day more than any other community of its size in America. Southwest Iowa communities were hardest hit in the early months as local National Guard units were called to duty as part of the 34th Infantry Division. That same date Maj. General Patton took command of US Forces and reorganized Army II Corps. Explore the Gold Star’s World War II exhibits covering both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of the war during our living history event this weekend!

Around 50 volunteers helped to get everything set up for the 9-11 memorial program this morning. They placed 343 flags for firefighters, 71 flags for police officers, 8 flags paramedics, and recognized the 40 passengers/crew on Flight 93 who tried to take over the plane which saved a 4th building, possibly the White House. Thank you to all the volunteers!! The 9/11 program is today at 1pm at the city park.

Members of Post 43 helped participate in a booth at Atlantic’s Produce in the Park event. We answered questions about what the American Legion is, what we do to help veterans, and how we serve the community as the Honor Guard and Color Guard. We are excited about possibly having new members join us and helping us grow in the community. Post 43 looks forward to the next time we can participate in Produce in the Park.
