As wildlife rehabilitators we take in sick, injured or orphaned wildlife with the goal of returning it to the wild. Some of the birds that can't be returned to the wild due to permanent injuries have stayed with us to become educational ambassadors for wildlife.

I am back from a few days off and cages have filled up fast. Today we admitted this young extremely thin Cooper’s hawk, along with this juvenile Broadwinged hawk. The Broadwing has sustained some pretty serious ocular damage due to being hit by a car.
All our outdoor aviaries are full with birds in their last stage of rehab. Gaining strength for eventual release.

Today is International Vulture Awareness Day.
Vultures matter as they are natures cleanup crew. By eating carrion their strong stomach acid can destroy diseases like anthrax , botulism, and brucellosis .Unfortunately, there are many types of vultures that are endangered around the world due to hazards, such as poisoning, motor vehicle collisions and illegal killing.

Yesterday we had the pleasure of releasing not one, but two beautiful juvenile red-tail hawks. Thank you to Beth and Mae of Marilyn Mae Farms for the use of your property.

🔸$5 Friday and VHP update 🔸

Opossums: We currently have two in care. The last two spring babies are officially in pre-release.

Spring Squirrels: we have the final group out in pre-release.

Baby Squirrels: Our ten little babies are doing great. The two injured ones are recovering. We have five more being transferred to us in just a few weeks from another rehabber which we are working to prepare for.

Head trauma squirrel- she is still eating her mash daily, her teeth look great, but she isn’t interested in veggies however we still offer them. She’s very active no longer showing signs of head trauma which is great.

Hope: Even though she isn't a wild rabbit, our sweet Hope deserves an update. She finished her second round of antibiotics and went to the vet for a recheck this past week. The abcess cavity is beyond stubborn, so we are no longer doing oral antibiotics we’ve switched to a topical antibiotic which we are now applying twice a day. She’s eating a bunch continues to gain steady weight which is great since when she was found she was significantly underweight. Slow and steady wins the race.

It’s been busy behind the scenes. Feeding, medication administration, wound cleaning, and cleaning on repeat. Our funds are getting low and we could use a boost to help us pay off the final vet bills and help offset food costs. Thank you all so much for all your support, we appreciate it endlessly.💛

We have been so busy that we missed posting last week‘s volunteer highlights. This week we are highlighting our sister team. Lori and Lisa Young.. we thank them for everything they do!
Over the years, Lori has given her time at Horizon Wings to cleaning aviaries, participating in educational programs, helping with annual events in various capacities, and maintaining the email distribution list. In 2022, Lori’s sister, Lisa, joined her in Connecticut and began helping with refreshments at Horizon Wings events. Together, she and Lori also took over creating many of the gift baskets for the events.

Lori credits MaryBeth with introducing her to parrots and further expanding her love of birds. That passion has led her to open her home to parrots in need, including the nine she currently cares for.

We are full! I have absolutely no cage space or no aviary space to take in another bird right now.
I wish I could help them all, I truly do ….
