As wildlife rehabilitators we take in sick, injured or orphaned wildlife with the goal of returning it to the wild. Some of the birds that can't be returned to the wild due to permanent injuries have stayed with us to become educational ambassadors for wildlife.

It was a busy morning here with these four intakes.
The Eastern screech owl had a collision with a car and has some pretty serious eye and head trauma. She has received supportive care and is on oxygen.
The two juvenile ravens came in, unable to use their legs. They were sent to Tufts for x-rays, . There was some spinal trauma seen but due to their symptoms ,rodenticide poisoning has not been ruled out. Their prognosis is poor.
The fourth one is this fledgling red tail hawk who presented with some dehydration and lethargy. He comes from downtown Hartford, so I am sure there is also a chance of rodenticide poisoning as bait boxes are known to be used in the area in which he was found. We will monitor him and reunite him with his parents as soon as possible..
What would’ve been our fifth bird was actually able to fly off on his own. People were concerned as they were seeing him with a wing droop, in the same area for the last two weeks, but he appears to be fine. A big thank you to everyone who provided Transport for these birds today, I could not do it without you!

This week’s volunteer highlight features Jeanne Wadsworth.
Jeanne joined us 17 years ago after a company layoff where she had been working in the corporate world in IT. She soon became a jack of all trades doing everything from cleaning avaries, to helping with programs, rescues, and more.
She also does much of our photography and puts together a wonderful yearly calendar. Thank you for 17 years of dedication and hard work Jeanne, you are appreciated!

Horizon Wing has had many volunteers come and go over the last 25 years..
As I have stated in the past our volunteers are priceless and we would like to give them credit for what they do, and have done for Horizon Wings. On this, our 25th year we would like to give our volunteers all the credit they deserve. We will be making weekly posts introducing some of our volunteers. The first volunteer is Deb Csere. Deb is a former elementary school teacher whose experience with children has contributed to her being a wonderful educator. Not only is Deb a wonderful educator, but behind the scenes, she does not mind getting her hands dirty while feeding or cleaning the birds and helping with daily chores. But, most of all what stands out with Deb is her compassion for all the birds, but especially for our Barn owl Tyton. Tyton , who we lovingly refer to as our resident curmudgeon can be a bit of a difficult bird, but Deb has formed a wonderful relationship with this bird and it shows with every program she does with him. Thank you, Deb for your hard work and dedication to Horizon Wings. You are appreciated.!

Another fine renesting by Rocco Massaro!
These 2 young Red shouldered hawks were found on the ground yesterday afternoon. The homeowner was very concerned and contacted us for help. He contained the babies, much to the chagrin of the mother who was in the area and still trying to feed the young. You can see in the picture she has a frog in her mouth.
For their safety, and to once again clean maggots out of ears, we took the young birds home overnight. Mom stayed in the area calling for them today, and arrived shortly after the nesting with a snake for dinner.

Tonight’s release was this very lucky Barred owl who was caught in bird netting that covered a chicken coop. He was found and quickly untangled by the home owner. His injuries were minor, an abrasion and a swollen foot.
Many times this type of entanglement can result in very serious injury.
Thanks for the picture Annie!
