Ecole Agape is a school started by Sister Myrtha Manigat in Lilavois, Haiti. She started the school for the poorest children, those who could not even afford the cost of public education. Our non-profit organization, Friends of Ecole Agape, was started after her passing to help carry on her work. Ecole Agape is a school for children in grades 1 – 6. School is held in the afternoon after other chil

dren leave La Providence a relatively new facility built by an Italian group after the earthquake. Many years ago Sister Myrtha had convinced another local school to allow her to use their building in the afternoon when the regular students went home. She did this because in Haiti you had to pay even to go to public school so many kids were home all day. School costs are about $150 a year for each student in a country where the average income is about $400/ year. Friends of Ecole Agape hopes to assist in the establishment of a library, help cover the cost of school supplies, uniforms, teachers’ salaries, and provide a lunch program for 200+ students so each child’s family does not have to pay these costs. A nearby Ecole Agape Preschool has also been more recently started in in Myrtha’s old home and is supported by a South Windsor, CT community group. Contributions will be solicited from individuals, businesses and churches in order to support these current and future identified needs. Members will also do fund raising activities and distribute monies and goods on a regular basis. The founding members of Friends of Ecole Agape, Inc. have been involved with support of Ecole Agape for decades in other ways and with other organizations. As a newly formed non-profit organization, we will continue our commitment to support education for the poor children in Haiti.
