Fielder Museum

Fielder Museum Fielder Museum is home to the Arlington Historical Society and features exhibits (and FB posts!) about the history of Arlington, Texas.

Visit us Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 3:30 PM at 1616 W. Abram Street in Arlington. The Fielder House Museum (corner of Abram Street and Fielder Road) is a hundred-year-old Arlington, Tex., historical landmark. Tennessee native James Park Fielder (d. 1948) moved to Alvarado in Johnson County, Texas, in 1884 after receiving a law degree from Vanderbilt University. The entrepreneurial Fielder farmed at several locations, was a successful banker and acquired large landholdings. He married Mattie Barnes (d. 1950) in 1887, and they had four sons. Fielder purchased a 215-acre farm called "The Hilltop" and erected this two-story brick home in 1914. Large groves of live oaks, fruit orchards and vegetable gardens were part of the property. For a time the Ku Klux Klan met in the woods behind the house, which was conveniently located midway between Fort Worth and Dallas and accessible because the Dallas-Fort Worth Interuban electric trolley had a stop right in front of the home. The Fielder House became the center for social gatherings of many prominent citizens. James Fielder served as an early Arlington councilman (briefly as mayor), was instrumental in the creation of the city's first sewage treatment system and also served on the original board of what is now the University of Texas at Arlington. He was also involved with the creation of SMU. The Arlington Historical Society now runs the city-owned home as a museum

You're invited to a special event!

Join us on Sunday, October 11, for "An Afternoon with Miss Texas," featuring Mary Nell Hendricks as our special guest.

In 1958, Mary Nell Hendricks—a 22-year-old 2nd-grade teacher at Berry Elementary—was crowned Miss Arlington. She went on to win Miss Texas and compete in the Miss America pageant, placing in the Top 10. As the first Miss Texas from Arlington, it was an exciting moment for the community, who proudly watched her whirlwind journey unfold.

Our newest exhibit at Fielder Museum celebrates Mary Nell's pageant journey and accomplishments. On display are photos, memorabilia, and personal keepsakes curated from Ms. Hendricks' private collection—including exclusive items from her time as Miss Texas.

The exhibit debuts on Sunday, October 11, with a special program. We are thrilled to welcome Mary Nell as our featured guest as she shares stories from her pageant days and memories of her life in Arlington.

Our Front Street Festival returns to Knapp Heritage Park this Saturday!

In addition to live music from Max and Landon, we'll be joined by UTA’s Museum Studies students! We have lots of activities planned, including tours of the historic cabins and schoolhouse, along with crafts—butter-making, hook-and-loom weaving, and cornhusk dolls. We always enjoy having UTA students join us, and these family-friendly activities are a wonderful way to experience pioneer life at Knapp.
