The Couch

Someone asked me recently about, “The Couch.” The couch was actually an old beat up loveseat which was dumped in Arcata at a spot we fed the unhoused community and their dogs, a couple of years ago. We fed people at this location until the city put up barricades and we had to move on.

The couch was a place for friends to gather for a meal. They loved the couch, and referred to themselves as, “The Couch Potatoes.” Eventually, the couch was removed, but I believe the barricades are still in place.

This group of people and their dogs are close to my heart. Some are no longer with us. Some are now in apartments, some have moved to the next town, and some, we still feed.

Since I’ve been asked, here are the couch photos. The photos bring me love, sadness, hope, tears, a smile, and complicated feelings. The couch was magical. I’m sorry it had to go.

Welcome Eric Olson!

Eric Olson, our newest cook made unbelievable pork and beans today! He cooked the pork for two days. Folks said it melted in their mouths. 😋

Just home after starting early afternoon, handing out meals, gear and dog coats to cold folks and their pets. Today on the menu was large homemade burritos by Cindy, fresh baked rolls by Danielle and the best smelling dessert bread (maybe gingerbread) with chocolate chips by Jeanette. Seriously a fabulous meal!

More sleeping bags, blankets and tents went out, and warm weatherproof dog coats.

A small group I feed flagged me down. One of their group was showing signs of hypothermia. He’s a very tall guy and he’d been in soaked clothing all night. I didn’t have anything to fit him in my car. Good thing I live nearby. I called ahead to two of my sons who are both 6’3” and told them I needed dry, large clothes asap. They gave me clothes from their closets, sweatpants, sweatshirts, a winter coat, XL socks, and lots of hand warmers. I raced back to Warren who was surrounded by his buddies and their dogs. Warren got a new tent, sleeping bag and blanket. (All from our donors!) Warren’s friends wrapped him in comfort, and true loving friendship while he ate his meal. Had it not been for our amazing cooks, my sons and Warren’s friends, I honestly don’t know what would have happened. I hate to think. It takes a village. Proud as heck of everyone involved today! 🥰

I found Samuel on Samoa Blvd today. He always appears he has someplace to go, or someplace to be. I often feel his desperation. Hard to explain, it’s just what I sense. I handed him a Humboldt Soup’s On meal in a brown bag, packed by Christina and Maureen. Creamy chicken, rice and vege soup by Haley, a fresh baked roll by Bill, and a giant just baked brownie cookie by Christina. He took the meal, along with dog food and water. He started to hop on his bike, but he stopped, turned around and said,”you know we’d be dead or in prison if it weren’t for this food, thank you.” Then off he rode. I’m not exactly sure what he meant, but it came from his heart, I’m sure of that.

So proud of my team, and deeply moved by Samuel.

I must take a moment to tell you about our volunteer extraordinaire, Christina. Christina has been with us a long time. In fact, I can’t remember not having Christina by our side. She has continuously baked scrumptious desserts, packed and delivered our meals, and she can even make soup! Last night, Christina surprised us with festive centerpieces, for our party, as well as made the most frightening, fun and delicious appetizers, including green meringue fingers, with fingernails and raspberry jam (blood.) We had yummy, long twisted snakes out of bread, with little faces and tongues, and the creepiest hand that was seriously the grossest thing ever, but the life of the party. All of it, a surprise! Our Christina is fabulous! 💀🎃👻🧙‍♀️
