What are the laws in California regarding a Private Investigator using a G.P.S. unit on someone's vehicle?

Here’s the law, clearly broken down:

🚔 The Core Law (California Penal Code § 637.7)

California’s main rule is simple but powerful:

It is illegal to use an electronic tracking device to determine the location or movement of a person without their consent.
A GPS tracker counts as an “electronic tracking device.”

👉 Translation:
A private investigator cannot just slap a GPS on someone’s car and track them.

🚫 What a Private Investigator CANNOT Do

A PI in California cannot:

Place a GPS tracker on a vehicle they or their client do NOT own
Track a person’s movements without consent
