NEW Joint Position Paper: Unified Physical Education: An Instructional Strategy for Achieving Active and Meaningful Participation for All

This joint position paper is a collaboration between Special Olympics North America (SONA), the National Consortium for Physical Education for Individuals with Disabilities (NCPEID), and SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators. It is intended for educators, parents, school administrators, Special Olympics Program staff, and the higher education community. The intent is to help clarify the purpose, design, and implementation of Special Olympics Unified Physical Education (Unified PE or UPE). This includes appropriate student placement and instructional delivery, as well as reinforcing that Unified PE is not a stand-alone curriculum, nor a replacement for adapted physical education services. Unified PE is a practical strategy with the goal of enhancing PE into a model of inclusive physical activity and social connection for all students. This paper is designed to accompany the SONA Unified Physical Education Playbook (2026, 3rd ed.), which provides a flexible framework, resources, and implementation tools to build more inclusive PE programs across school levels.

New Strategies Open Access Article: An Assessment Plan for the Affective Standards: Leading with Adventure-Based Learning by Amanda McMurray & James Ressler

"Adventure-based learning (ABL) constitutes a novel model that champions learner-focused immersion in hands-on experiences aimed at cultivating and facilitating the acquisition of collective effervescence and a variety of social and emotional skills (Stuhr et al., 2025). In schools, effective ABL programs include components of team building, outdoor education skills, and excursions, such as climbing and camping. The direct experiences offered through an ABL model include intentionally designed engagements that promote personal and group development (Sutherland & Legge, 2016)."

We are pleased to share that Special Olympics North America and SHAPE America have renewed their Memorandum of Understanding, reaffirming a long-standing collaboration that has supported inclusive physical activity and Unified PE in schools across the US!

Last month, SHAPE America CEO Stephanie Morris and Chief Program Officer Carly Wright joined Unified Champion Schools SVP Andrea Cahn and others at Bush Hill Elementary School in Alexandria, VA to celebrate the school's achievements with inclusion and becoming a nationally recognized UCS banner school.

This renewed MOU continues a shared commitment to equipping health and physical educators with the training, resources, and support that helps build inclusive school cultures, starting in the gym.
