Reminder When Submitting a Crime Stoppers Tip
When you submit a Crime Stoppers tip, allow the investigating agency time to work the information. Investigations do not always move as quickly as you may expect, but that does not mean your tip is being ignored.
Do not call the investigating agency to provide the same information after submitting a Crime Stoppers tip. Law enforcement agencies have recorded phone lines. Calling the agency and identifying yourself or providing the same information can compromise your anonymity and invalidate your Crime Stoppers tip.
Why "Funneling" Is Prohibited
Compromises Anonymity
Crime Stoppers is built on protecting the anonymity of tipsters. Individuals who contact law enforcement directly or become known to investigators are no longer anonymous, defeating one of the core principles of the Crime Stoppers program.
May Invalidate Reward Eligibility
Crime Stoppers cash rewards are intended for anonymous citizen tipsters. Individuals acting as registered or known informants, or those working directly with law enforcement, are not eligible for Crime Stoppers rewards. Attempting to use Crime Stoppers to bypass these rules is prohibited.
Creates Problems for Investigations
Submitting information through Crime Stoppers while also communicating directly with law enforcement can create conflicting records, complicate investigations, and raise legal and procedural issues regarding documentation and discovery.
Remember: Submit your tip, remain anonymous, and allow the investigating agency to conduct its investigation. Your patience helps protect both your anonymity and the integrity of the Crime Stoppers program.
