Alaska IBEW The IBEW is among the world’s strongest labor organizations, representing workers in a range of skilled occupations in a wide variety of fields.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers was founded in St. Louis, Missouri on November 28, 1891. IBEW Local 1547 was chartered in Alaska on October 1, 1946, assuming the jurisdiction of IBEW work in Alaska from Local 46 in Seattle, and continues to advocate for safety and protection of the rights of electrical and communications workers, as well as local government employees, health care industry employees, and many more non-construction occupations. Local 1547 represents workers in many diverse construction classifications including power linemen, inside wiremen, power plant workers and technicians, mechanics, warehouse workers, line clearance tree trimmers and heavy equipment operators. Classifications in communications include telephone linemen, installation and repair workers, telephone operators, central office technicians, cable maintenance workers, and fiber optic specialists, just to name a few. We also take pride in knowing that our efforts in strengthening safety and worker rights benefit many other workers in our state, not just those we represent. Traditionally, people think of IBEW members as people who work with electricity—but over the years, other classifications have joined the ranks of Local 1547. Some of the many classifications we represent are: cooks, certified nursing assistants, clerks, accounting specialists, engineers, city and municipal employees, property management workers, maintenance custodians, gardeners, librarians, plant services workers, programmers, radar operators, cashiers and x-ray technicians. With close to 5000 members, IBEW Local 1547 is, we believe, one of the strongest unions in the state of Alaska.

⚡ Educating Our Educators. Powering Alaska's Future. ⚡

Career and Technical Education educators from across Alaska gathered in Anchorage last week for the annual ACTE Conference. IBEW Local 1547 was proud to welcome them to the Tom Cashen Electrical Apprenticeship School for an IBEW hosted pre-session workshop.

These dedicated educators learned firsthand about the incredible opportunities available through apprenticeship and the pathways that lead to rewarding, high-demand careers in the electrical industry. By educating our educators, we help ensure that students across the state are exposed to career options they may never have been exposed to.

The future of Alaska's workforce starts in the classroom.

When educators understand the value of apprenticeship, they can inspire the next generation to build successful careers, strengthen their communities, and power Alaska's future.

GCI says you "lose rights" by signing a card.

Think about that for a second. Signing a card IS a right. Federal law (Section 7 of the NLRA) protects it. You can't lose your rights by using them.

Here's what you actually have today: GCI decides your pay, your schedule, your call-outs, and your discipline. You take what they give you.

Here's what you have with a union: a legally binding contract you vote on, the right to have a rep in the room in any meeting that could lead to discipline, and a grievance process instead of "because we said so."

So ask GCI: which right, exactly, do you lose?

Make them name it.

Some things never change.

An old photograph, an IBEW Local 1547 volunteer project, and a few GCI flags in the background.

For decades, we've been showing up for Alaska's workers. Our efforts to organize GCI employees have faced setbacks, but we've never stopped believing they deserve a voice at work.

Today, that effort is gaining momentum. We were there then. We're still here now.

IBEW Local 1547: Lighting the Path for Southeast Alaska Youth

The IBEW Local 1547 is proud to have facilitated the Youth Electricians Program for students across Southeast Alaska last week in Klawock, Alaska. In collaboration with the Southeast Consortium consisting of 16 different school districts, the Sealaska Heritage Institute, Pathfinders Solutions, and Generations Southeast, provided a 40-hour, week-long training course for high school students.

IBEW Local 1547 Wireman Instructor Manny Acuna designed and taught the course at Generations Southeast, bringing together students from communities throughout the region. This course was specifically designed to help prepare students for the IBEW/NECA Electrical Apprenticeship Program. Throughout the week, students were able to engage with hands-on training in basic wireman skills while being introduced to not just the wireman trade, but additional career pathways within the electrical industry, including telecommunications and linework.

Efforts like this not only generate awareness of our trade, but simultaneously demonstrate the pathway, and how to make a career in the trades. By investing in our youth, we are building a skilled local workforce, strengthening our communities, and creating lasting opportunities for future generations.

Programs like this are only possible when education, industry, and community organizations unite with a shared commitment to supporting young people. The success of this program reflects what can be accomplished when we work as a team.

IBEW Local 1547 members gathered at Generations Southeast in Klawock last week for a BBQ celebrating and welcoming our newest members from Alaska Power & Telephone.

Members, families, and supportive community partners came together to recognize this exciting new chapter, and the work it took to make it happen. We’re proud of our brothers who stood together to be heard. We're stronger together, and we're so happy you're with us.
