A Brief History of the Amherst BID

Founded in 2011, the Amherst Business Improvement District (BID) was established to enable property owners in Amherst’s central business district to pool their resources and collectively fund improvements, supplemental services, and programs that enhance the downtown experience. Created with the vision of promoting commercial vitality, cultural activity, and a vibrant destination for visitors and residents alike, the BID has since played a pivotal role in strengthening the community’s economic and cultural fabric. Organized as a 501(c)6 nonprofit governed by Massachusetts General Law Chapter 40-O, the Amherst BID is led by a board of directors representing property owners, retailers, residents, the Town, and local academic institutions. This board provides fiduciary oversight and strategic direction to the professional team responsible for managing initiatives, implementing beautification projects, supporting small businesses, and creating a welcoming, dynamic downtown Amherst. Since its formation the Amherst BID has been renewed thrice by a vote of eligible property owners in 2013, 2018, and 2023.
