Following the first frost, last Friday we had our first ever harvest of peanuts! This Northern Hardy Valencia peanut variety was one of the new plants we experimented with this past season in the additional space in our new Frank East garden.

Peanuts appreciate well drained soil, so they are a great fit for our new raised beds. They enjoy being companion planted with plants that also grow underground in similar conditions, and those which are not too tall to shade them out, such as beets, carrots, and potatoes. Like other legumes, peanuts are also great nitrogen fixers for our soil!

Peanuts are native to South America and have historically been cultivated for food and been processed into oil and beverages. Our peanut seed is from a seed company local to the Northeast called Fruition Seeds.
