Uniting Parents Uniting Parents is a program of the Coalition of Health Services, Inc. Uniting Parents is a parent case management program.

This program utilizes trained parents of children and/or youth with disabilities to be parent case managers and mentors families and young adults as they research services. We help families navigate local, state, and federal programs so families can find the resources they need for their child with disabilities under the age of 21. Our nonprofit agency is the Coalition of Health Services and we receive our funding through grants from the Department of State Health Services. We offer support, information, referrals, a resource handbook, networking opportunities, a Recycle Closet, camp scholarships, college scholarships, respite reimbursement program, and most of all support using a network of parents who are case managers. Our case managers are familiar with many resources that may help families find solutions, strategize, and access services including insurance coverage for children with chronic medical conditions living in Texas under the age of 21. Uniting Parents has two other offices-one in Dumas and one in Lubbock. Our service area includes the top 32 counties of the TX Panhandle. Each of the sub office parent case managers travel to designated northern and/or southern counties of the TX Panhandle and are integral community partners with families and their children to provide comprehensive case management and resources to families. Uniting Parents can be a wealth of information to families and can serve as a conduit to finding resources. Families and agencies are encouraged to call us at our toll free number 888-892-2273 for referrals, case management, recycle closet, scholarships, and respite. Halloween should be spookyβ€”not dangerous! Keep these simple tips in mind for a safe night of trick-or-treating:

COSTUME SAFETY
β€’ Choose fire-resistant costumes, wigs and accessories.
β€’ Add reflective tape or glow sticks to help children stay visible after dark.
β€’ Choose nontoxic makeup instead of masks that can limit vision. Remove makeup before bedtime.

WHILE TRICK-OR-TREATING
β€’ Young children should always be accompanied by a responsible adult.
β€’ Older children should stick to familiar, well-lit areas and stay with friends.
β€’ Set a route and a time to be home.
β€’ Remind children never to enter a stranger’s home or vehicle.
β€’ Wait until you’re home to eat treats and check for potential allergens.

WHILE DRIVING
β€’ Watch carefully for children in streets, driveways, medians and near curbs.
β€’ Use extra caution when entering or exiting driveways and alleys.
β€’ Be especially alert for children wearing dark clothing.
β€’ Avoid distractions and slow down during trick-or-treat hours.
Have fun, stay alert, and make safety part of your Halloween plans!

This month, the Amarillo Office of Emergency Management is sharing some common causes of house fires and simple steps you can take to help keep your home and family safe.

CANDLES: Candles are a common source of home fires, especially in bedrooms and living rooms.
β€’ Never leave a burning candle unattended.
β€’ Keep candles away from anything that can catch fire.
β€’ If you leave the room, blow it out!

HEATING EQUIPMENT: Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fires
β€’ Have your chimney cleaned every year.
β€’ Have your HVAC system inspected regularly.
β€’ Never leave a fire unattended.
β€’ Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn.
β€’ Plug space heaters directly into the wallβ€”never use an extension cord.

COOKING: Cooking is the #1 cause of house fires in Amarillo. With Halloween parties and gatherings happening throughout the month, remember these kitchen safety tips:
β€’Never leave food cooking on the stove unattended.
β€’ Keep kitchen towels and potholders away from burners.
β€’ Keep anything flammable away from your stovetop.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY
β€’ Consider installing AFCI breakers and outlets, which can help prevent electrical fires.
β€’ Have an electrician inspect your home's wiring every four years.
β€’ Check cords and equipment for frayed or damaged wires.
β€’ Avoid plugging too many devices into one outlet.
β€’ Replace damaged cords right away.

CHECK YOUR SMOKE ALARMS
Fire Safety & Prevention Month is also a great time to check your smoke alarms. Replace smoke alarm batteries every six months and make sure your alarms are working properly.
A working smoke alarm can make the difference in protecting your life and your home.
