William Moncus (1st Marine Division) was high up in the mountains at the Chinese border when they were surrounded, and the great retreat from the Chosin Reservoir had begun. He wound up getting hit in the helmet by a gr***de. Soon, he was hit again in the leg.

Mark Zambon (Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician attached to India Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines) was stationed out of FOB Jackson in Afghanistan when a call came in that a platoon had discovered signs of a possible IED. Upon investigating, and accidentally stepping on a pressure switch which set off the IED, he received life-saving aid from his team & the Navy Corpsman, and transportation from the Afghan National Police.

Kenneth "Rock" Merritt (508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne) was dug in listening to a German propaganda speaker when a machine gun started up. The paratrooper grabbed some Gammon gr***des and crawled 500 yards under constant fire. He was able to walk back and the push into France continued.

Bill Bates (717th Air Cavalry, 1st Aviation Brigade) lied to his parents. The letters home contained none of the bad stuff he faced daily as a helicopter pilot or the misery of the rainy weather. And, yes, it could get worse. While supporting an artillery battery that was under attack, his engine was hit and he began to plunge through the trees to the jungle floor.

When, then Marine advisor, LtGen Paul Van Riper (Advisor, 3rd Marine Battalion, Republic of Vietnam Marine Division) arrived in Vietnam, he had already faced live fire in the Dominican Republic. That helped the rookie officer deal with the more intense combat he would now face. There were many combat assaults, but the one he remembers most is the one in which a Viet Cong rifleman shot him.

Part 3: Some Rangers were getting shot up at a bad LZ and the Eagle Dust Off ships were on the way. Two choppers had already been shot down but Fred Behrens was not fazed. He sat his Huey down and picked up the injured squad leader. They got him to safety and returned but, during the second approach, he was shot through the ankle. As he struggled to control his aircraft, it received heavy fire and began to go down.
