Industry-specific English language instruction is helping workers strengthen their skills, communicate more effectively and advance in their careers.

A 2026 EnGen survey of more than 6,000 English learners across multiple industries, including construction, highlights the benefits of English language instruction tailored to workers' industries, including improvements in job skills, productivity and workplace communication.

Building on these findings, NCCER has partnered with EnGen to offer English Skills for Construction Foremen, a 3- or 6-month course that teaches English vocabulary and grammar through construction-specific terminology and examples. The course can also help prepare learners for NCCER's Construction Foreman Certification Program in English.

When Joshua Ross enrolled in his first NCCER Core Construction course, he couldn’t read a tape measure. However, he was determined to build a better future.

While earning his HSE/GED, Josh worked a full-time factory job and drove 40 minutes to attend construction training three evenings each week. Through hard work and perseverance, he earned his NCCER certifications and was accepted into an apprenticeship program.

We’re proud to celebrate Josh’s journey and grateful to COABE, Lowe's Foundation and Laura Elsbrock for helping make stories like his possible.
