This hawk gets a second chance to live, thanks to Newhouse Wildlife Rescue. Let’s not poison him again. It’s time to ban anticoagulant rodenticides!

He was just released today! This red tailed hawk came to us three weeks ago. He was unable to stand, very thin, very weak and his blood wouldn’t clot normally. After being treated for rat poison, he is a whole new hawk. Strong and majestic, as nature intended. Ready to help us control the rodent population for free…

We see this a lot of sick predators come into the rescue after they eat rodents that have been poisoned.

Wildlife rehabilitators have been complaining about the effects rodenticides are having on our predator species for years….

We just had more yard signs made and will post about how you can get your soon! We ordered them in bulk and aren’t trying to make anything off of them. We just want to get them out there so we can spread the information.

Most people wouldn’t use these poisons if they really understood the impact they have on non target species.

Education is key. Let’s help spread the word.

Keep checking back and we will let you know how you can get your yard sign!

This red tailed hawk has been with us for about a week now. Being treated for an injured leg and rodenticide poison.

He wasn’t able to stand up when he first arrived, but look at him now…

Giving us the evil eye and everything. ❤️

🦅 FROM MASS AUDUBON: Update on MA legislation regarding rodenticides 🪤:

CURRENT STATUS OF RODENTICIDE LEGISLATION:

The best chance to win a statewide ban of anticoagulant rodenticides is passage of the ban as an amendment to the Mass Ready Act (S3064). The Senate included, in their version of this bill, Sections 74 & 75 which state, if this bill becomes law, that cities and towns would be able to ban anticoagulant rodenticides as bylaws within their municipal borders, including private property.

Because the House & Senate passed different versions of the same bill, a “Conference Committee” was appointed to sort out the differences. A Conference Committee is a temporary group of three representatives and three senators. This fall we will lobby them vigorously on the content of the final version of the bill to try to get them to include the statewide anticoagulant rodenticide ban!

Mass Ready Act Conference Committee Members:

Senator Julian Cyr, Committee Chair - [email protected]
Senator Rebecca Rausch - [email protected]
Senator Peter Durant - [email protected]
Rep. Michael Finn - [email protected]
Rep. Christine Barber - [email protected]
Rep. Kenneth Sweezey - [email protected]

Advocacy Plan to Influence Decision:

In August, Mass Audubon will develop two methods of advocacy with the Mass Ready Act Conference Committee to launch at the Rescue Raptors Campaign Meeting on Tuesday, September 8th 7-8pm [Register].

We will be lobbying the Conference Committee vigorously on the content of the final version of the bill to try to get them to include the statewide anticoagulant rodenticide ban!

For Individuals: We will create an online petition for individuals to sign-on to the Mass Audubon rodenticide ban support letter to the Conference Committee. There will be a link we will promote via email and social media to this petition asking advocates to add their names to our letter. We expect (hope) to get thousands of individual signing onto our letter!
For Groups and Organizations: We will share a letter template and ask each community group and coalition organization to write the Conference Committee their own unique letter. We hope to get 50+ organizational letters emailed to the committee!

Guess how many mice I can eat in a year -

New England Wildlife Center had a Great Horned Owl in its care for a year for rodenticide poisoning, and it ate over 2000 mice! Not only does it show what great pest control nature provides, but also how devastating rodenticide poisoning can be. Even if an owl survives, rehab can take a whole year.
