In late August, The Covering welcomed two new children into The Raining Season family. Meet siblings Fatima, age 5, and Yusif, age 8.

As they begin this new chapter, we are asking our TRS family to surround them with love and support through sponsorship and prayer. Coming to a new home is a big change for any child. There are new faces, new routines, and so much to learn. For Fatima and Yusif, The Covering is now a place where they can begin to find stability, grow in trust, and experience the love and care they deserve.

As summer comes to a close, The Raining Season Preparatory and Junior Secondary School is once again preparing to fill with the sounds of students and teachers. Although school was out for much of the summer, learning never stopped at TRS. Through a summer school program for students and professional development for teachers, the TRS team has been preparing for another year of growth and learning.

At The Raining Season, our desire is simple in making sure that every vulnerable child who comes through our gates has a safe place to live, opportunity through education, nutritious food, essential medical care, and spiritual nurturing in a loving, Christ-centered community.

For Esther, opportunity looks like continuing her education. This month, she will begin Junior Secondary School, taking another step in her educational career. She enjoys school and is looking forward to the new year.

Last week on the blog we shared the exciting news that we raised the funds needed to call The Covering home for another year, and for siblings Fatima and Yusif, one of the greatest gifts is knowing they now have a safe place to live TOGETHER. While they are still in need of sponsorship support, they have a place where they can live, grow, and be cared for alongside one another. In a season of change and uncertainty, Fatima and Yusif don’t have to face it alone. They have each other and a safe place to call home.

Join us in celebrating The Raining Season being able to call The Covering home for another year!

The Covering provides somewhere to eat, somewhere to sleep, somewhere to learn, somewhere to play. The Raining Season, our children, and staff have been able to call The Covering home for fourteen years because each August, the Lord has provided the funds needed to cover our rent. This year was no different.
…
This year, our Executive Director, Lori Pyle, worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make it possible for us to meet this need through a combination of generous church partners, longtime supporters of The Raining Season, and first-time donors who gave in memory or honor of, and the Outlaw State of Kind Fund of Music Community Foundation.

Thank you to every person, church, and organization who gave this year to support our children and help secure another year at The Covering. Your generosity allows us to continue showing up, day after day, to love and serve vulnerable children in Sierra Leone. We are grateful for the years behind us, and we are excited to see what God will continue to do through The Raining Season in the year ahead.

School may be on summer holiday, but the busyness never stops at The Raining Season. This summer holiday, sixteen children from The Raining Season have had the opportunity to spend time with their families. Depending on when they left, the children will spend up to four weeks with their loved ones before returning to TRS at the end of this month.

While these visits may be temporary, they are an important part of something much bigger. For children living at The Raining Season, time with family is about more than this holiday visit. These opportunities allow children to strengthen relationships with their families and become more connected to the people and communities they come from. Uncle Osseh explained that these visits are especially important for future reunification. They give children the chance to get to know their families more deeply and to meet extended family members who may not have the opportunity to visit them while they were living at The Covering.

A team trip to The Raining Season is about so much more than what can fit into a suitcase. It is about showing up. It is about sitting beside a child, sharing a meal, playing a game, listening to a story, praying together, and reminding the children and staff at The Raining Season just how loved they are.

In June, six team members traveled to Sierra Leone from Tennessee, Arkansas, and Nebraska. Led by Lisa Rippy, the team stayed at The Swiss Hotel, just blocks from The Covering. Staying so close meant they could easily spend time at the center throughout the week while coming and going, joining in the everyday rhythm of life, and simply being present.

Join us in congratulating our students who recently received their National Primary School Examination (NPSE) results. In June, 21 children from The Raining Season’s Preparatory School, including Esther K., Teange, Alex, and Esther L., took the National Primary School Examination (NPSE). We are excited to share that each child passed and will begin Junior Secondary School in just a few weeks!

In June, the addition of two new wheelchairs meant new opportunities for two of our children with special needs, Kadie and Mia.

A special donor provided funds specifically so that Kadie could receive a wheelchair. A wheelchair for Kadie will give her greater independence and make it easier for her to get out of the Hope Apartment and participate in activities throughout the compound. She has even spent time coloring in the same space where the other children spend time playing outside!

World Hope International generously donated Mia’s new wheelchair. Mia’s new wheelchair is quite different from a traditional wheelchair. It has a sturdy metal frame with one wheel in the front and two wheels in the back. When they delivered the wheelchair, World Hope International made modifications and adjustments so that it would fit Mia securely and meet her specific needs. Because her body is supported so well, Mia’s posture and head control improved noticeably while she was sitting in the chair.

We are incredibly grateful to the special donor who provided the funds that made Kadie’s wheelchair possible. We are also thankful to World Hope International for donating Mia’s wheelchair and taking the time to make the modifications needed to fit her securely. We are grateful that the Lord continues to work through others to provide for the needs of our children. What a blessing it is to see Him use the generosity and compassion of others to bring new possibilities and joy to the children of The Raining Season.
