Yesterday, ActionAid Sierra Leone joined The Ministry of Youth Affairs to celebrate 2026 in Lungi, Port Loko district, under the global theme "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations."

Our Head of Business Development and Communication was on ground to symbolically present small grants to 15 Chiefdom Youth Councils, as part of our European Union in Sierra Leone funded Youth Action for Good Governance and Self-Reliance (YAGGS) project, implemented in partnership with Centre for Coordination of Youth Activities CCYA, in collaboration with The Ministry of Youth Affairs .

The purpose of the grant is to enable chiefdom youth councils to create and implement their own recreational, livelihood, entrepreneurship and digital interventions that can economically empower them. Across Tonkolili, Moyamba, and Western Area Rural, YAGGS project is putting resources directly in the hands of young people by funding Chiefdom Youth Councils’ (CYCs) ventures in farming, livestock rearing, and fish preservation, strengthening youth-led CSOs, and supporting skills graduates to launch their own start-ups. It's all built around one goal: helping marginalized youth, including young people living with disabilities, take a real seat at the decision-making tables and contribute to good governance.
Symbolically, the small grants were presented to Kaiyamba Chiefdom Youth Council Moyamba District, Kholifa Rowalla Chiefdom Youth Council Tonkolili District and Koya Zonal Youth Council Western Area Rural District, representing all the 15 CYCs.

As Madam Kenyeh Barlay, Minister of Ministry of Planning and Economic Development , said at yesterday's event, "Our commitment to young people will not be judged by the number of programs we announce. It will be judged by whether a qualified young person can find an opportunity without depending exclusively on personal connections."
That's the standard we're holding ourselves to.

𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝘀. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.

This , we are reminded that no matter where young people live, their hopes are the same things, real opportunities, and a voice that counts.

At ActionAid, we recognize young people as critical change makers and stand with them, everywhere, pushing for that future.

𝙋𝙚𝙣𝙨 𝘿𝙤𝙬𝙣, 𝙃𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙐𝙥!

Over the last few weeks, 30 girl advocates spent part of their holiday time learning handcraft skills. Scaling up the 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹-𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗚𝗟𝗥𝗔 𝟯) 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁, adolescent girls from communities in Freetown are warming up with learning craft skills that would come in handy for self-reliance. Based on the girls’ design, ActionAid and training facilitators from Girls Advocacy Development Network ( ) have used this space to harness their creativity while discussing experience, strategies and solutions to their own challenges.

In the next few months, they will be engaged in advocacy actions on addressing the issues they identified during their research on challenges they and their peers face in their everyday lives. The girl-led action phase supports advocacy and action work enabling the girls to enact change based on the findings of their research. Watch this space for how that unfolds.

For now, let's make beaded crafts, ankara wall frames, reusable menstrual pads and more!

Through the UNFPA Sierra Leone -GPECM supported project, ActionAid Sierra Leone is empowering community male mentors in Pujehun and Kambia Districts on gender transformative norms to become agents for gender equality, positive masculinity, and the protection of girls' rights.

During the training, participants strengthened their understanding of gender and social norms, the drivers and consequences of child marriage, safeguarding, referral pathways, and practical strategies for engaging men and boys to promote gender equality.

They also developed community action plans to lead awareness-raising efforts and support positive behaviour change within their communities.

One participant, Moriba Sajoe in Pujehun, described the training as life-changing:

"𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝑰 𝒔𝒆𝒆 𝒇𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏. 𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒅 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒔 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆, 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒈𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒃𝒐𝒕𝒉 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔."

Inspired by the training, Moriba has pledged to work with schools, parents, and community leaders to raise awareness on responsible parenting, prevent child marriage and teenage pregnancy, and encourage girls to stay in school.

By engaging men and boys as allies, we are building safer communities where girls can thrive, realise their full potential, and live free from child marriage.

Together, we can end child marriage and advance gender equality.
