As the Global Week of Climate Action comes to a close today, ActionAid Sierra Leone and our partners walked through the streets of Makeni, Bombali, demanding climate justice and the cancellation of unjust debt. 🌍✊

Communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis did not cause it, yet they carry its heaviest burden, while unjust debt drains the resources needed to adapt and rebuild. The week may end today, but the fight doesn't. It's time to , not debt.

Climate justice now. Cancel unjust debt.

𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿! 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀!

As the Global Week of Climate Action (Sept 14–20) continues, ActionAid, Global Platform Sierra Leone and our Partners stood in solidarity with Global Platforms worldwide. Together, we mobilized, raised our voices, and demanded Climate Justice.

Our amazing team joined by the Mayor of Makeni City Abubakarr Lamtales Kamara did a Climate Walk today in Makeni, standing in solidarity with communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis. This was not just a walk it was a powerful movement to ensure the voices of those most impacted are heard loud and clear, and to hold duty bearers accountable for urgent action.

We marched for systemic change,as we raise our voices for climate justice, an equitable power shift that puts people and the planet first. We are reclaiming our commons, defending human rights, and joining young people in their demand for resilient, sustainable communities free from pollution.

𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁

The European Union in Sierra Leone-funded Youth Action for Good Governance and Self-Reliance (YAGGS) project has successfully equipped young university graduates in Tonkolili, and Moyamba with essential job readiness skills.

This seminar, implemented by ActionAid Sierra Leone and the Centre for Coordination of Youth Activities CCYA , provided intensive training in:
✅ Career Guidance
✅ CV development & Application Letter Writing
✅ Job Search Techniques
✅ Interview Skills

Hezina Johnson, YAGGS Project Manager, shared the vision: “We are committed to imparting knowledge to these young minds for a competitive job market. After attaining tertiary education, we believe one must be able to make themselves marketable.”

Participants described the training as transformative.
Mohamed Kabia, EBK University, said, “This training widened my thoughts on CV development and has given me the confidence to apply for any job.”
Katumu Kumba Ngebuva from Njala University said, “I have learned a lot, especially on CV development and interviews. This will help me prepare well for a quick job. I promise to cascade the message to other young people.”

With these practical tools, young graduates are now better positioned to explore opportunities, secure gainful employment, and contribute to good governance, employability, and self‑reliance.

Across Sierra Leone and the Global South, communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis are paying the price of an unfair system.
ActionAid's latest report reveals that 93.5% of climate-vulnerable countries are in or at risk of debt distress, while spending nearly 25 times more on debt repayments than on climate action. Countries that did the least to cause the climate crisis are being forced to choose between repaying creditors and investing in people, public services, and climate resilience.

This Global Week of Climate Action, we are joining movements around the world to:
-Cancel unjust debt
-Deliver climate finance as grants, not loans
-Establish a UN Framework Convention on Sovereign Debt, so climate-vulnerable countries have an equal voice in global debt decisions
-Put people and planet before profits

ActionAid Sierra Leone in partnership with Centre for Coordination of Youth Activities CCYA brought together young people from across Sierra Leone for the National Youth Conference on Shared Learning and Policy Influencing to address local governance challenges, as part of the European Union in Sierra Leone funded project. A platform was provided for 150 youth representatives, including women and persons with disabilities, alongside government officials and other key stakeholders to harmonize district position papers, strengthen collective advocacy, and engage directly with decision-makers.

Through dialogue, shared learning, and policy discussions, duty bearers made commitments to advance solutions that promote accountable, inclusive, and responsive governance for young people.
