“Education should not end with the classroom or be limited by age.”

In Aroma, Kassala State, UNESCO and its partners have launched a new literacy and adult education programme, expanding learning opportunities for adults who may have missed the chance to access education earlier in life.

Working alongside the Ministry of Education and Guidance of Kassala State, the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture (NATCOM), the Adult Education Department, and local and community leadership, UNESCO is supporting literacy and lifelong learning as pathways to greater participation, opportunity and local development.

The initiative is part of UNESCO’s wider efforts to restore and expand access to learning in Sudan, particularly for communities facing conflict, displacement and longstanding barriers to education.

في أروما بولاية كسلا، أطلقت اليونسكو وشركاؤها برنامجاً جديداً لمحو الأمية وتعليم الكبار، بهدف توسيع فرص التعلّم أمام من لم تتح لهم فرصة الحصول على التعليم في مراحل سابقة من حياتهم.

وبالتعاون مع وزارة التربية والتوجيه بولاية كسلا، واللجنة الوطنية السودانية للتربية والعلوم والثقافة، وإدارة تعليم الكبار، والقيادات المحلية والمجتمعية، تدعم اليونسكو محو الأمية والتعلّم مدى الحياة باعتبارهما مدخلاً لتعزيز المشاركة، وتوسيع الفرص، ودعم التنمية المحلية.

وتأتي هذه المبادرة ضمن جهود اليونسكو الأوسع لاستعادة فرص التعلّم وتوسيع نطاق الوصول إلى التعليم في السودان، لا سيما في المجتمعات التي تواجه آثار النزاع والنزوح والعوائق المستمرة أمام التعليم.

التعليم مسارٌ نحو السلام في كسلا

التقى ممثل اليونسكو لدى السودان، السيد جنيد سوروش والي، بـ السيد عثمان عمر عثمان، وزير التربية والتوجيه بولاية كسلا، لبحث سبل تعزيز التعاون في مجالات التعليم، وتنمية مهارات الشباب، ومكافحة خطاب الكراهية، والثقافة.

وتركزت المناقشات على تمكين المعلمين والطلاب، وتعزيز الوعي بخطاب الكراهية وحقوق الإنسان ضمن الأنشطة التعليمية، وتعزيز المشاركة المجتمعية في المناطق التي تم تحديدها كأكثر تأثراً بهذه التحديات.

كما تناول اللقاء مواصلة دعم مبادرة مزرعة المعلم، واستكشاف فرص حشد الشراكات والموارد من أجل بناء المهارات وتنمية المجتمعات.

وبالتعاون مع اللجنة الوطنية السودانية للتربية والعلم والثقافة، جددت اليونسكو وولاية كسلا التزامهما بتوظيف التعليم والثقافة والاتصال كأدوات لتعزيز الحوار والتماسك الاجتماعي والسلام.

Education as a Pathway to Peace in Kassala

UNESCO Representative to Sudan Mr. Junaid Sorosh-Wali met with Mr. Osman Omer Osman, the Minister of Education and Guidance of Kassala State to strengthen cooperation on education, youth skills and countering hate speech and culture.

Discussions focused on empowering teachers and students, integrating awareness of hate speech and human rights into educational activities, and strengthening community engagement in identified hotspots.

The meeting also explored continued support for the Teacher’s Farm initiative and opportunities to mobilise partnerships and resources for skill building and community development.

Together with the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, UNESCO and Kassala State reaffirmed their commitment to using education, culture and communication as a driver of dialogue, social cohesion and peace.

"مكافحة خطاب الكراهية مسؤولية مشتركة."

في كسلا، جمعت اليونسكو المؤسسات الحكومية والتربويين والإعلاميين والفاعلين المجتمعيين لتحويل هذه المسؤولية المشتركة إلى عمل ملموس، من خلال تعزيز التعاون لمكافحة خطاب الكراهية وتشجيع الحوار والتعايش السلمي والتماسك الاجتماعي.

واستناداً إلى هذا العمل، ستدعم اليونسكو إعداد وبث رسائل توعوية تراعي السياق المحلي عبر الإذاعة والتلفزيون، وبلغات ولهجات مختلفة، بما يسهم في الوصول إلى مختلف مكونات مجتمع كسلا.

“Countering hate speech is a shared responsibility.”

In Kassala, UNESCO brought together government institutions, educators, media professionals and community actors to turn this shared responsibility into action, strengthening cooperation to counter hate speech and promote dialogue, peaceful coexistence and social cohesion.

Building on this work, UNESCO will support the development and broadcasting of locally relevant awareness messages through radio and television, in different languages and dialects, helping reach Kassala’s diverse communities.

In times of conflict, words are never just words. They shape how communities see one another - and peace is built, in part, through the conversations we have in classrooms, on the radio and within our communities.

🕊️ اليوم العالمي للسلام | السودان

في السودان، لا يعني السلام مجرد غياب النزاع، بل يُبنى في الفصول الدراسية، والمجتمعات، والفضاءات الثقافية، ومن خلال المعلومات التي نتشاركها مع بعضنا البعض.

وفي هذا اليوم الدولي للسلام، تجدد اليونسكو التزامها بدعم المجتمعات السودانية من خلال التعليم، وحماية الثقافة والتراث، وتعزيز الوصول إلى المعلومات الموثوقة، ومكافحة خطاب الكراهية، ودعم الحوار والتماسك الاجتماعي.

إن كل فصل دراسي يُعاد فتحه، وكل موقع للتراث الثقافي تتم حمايته، وكل صوت يتم تمكينه من خلال المعلومات الموثوقة، وكل مساحة تُتاح للحوار، تسهم في إرساء أسس سودان أكثر سلاماً وقدرةً على الصمود.

In Sudan, peace is more than the absence of conflict. It is built in classrooms, communities, cultural spaces and through the information we share with one another.

On this International Day of Peace, UNESCO reaffirms its commitment to supporting Sudanese communities through education, the protection of culture and heritage, access to reliable information, countering hate speech, and strengthening dialogue and social cohesion.

Every classroom reopened, every cultural heritage site protected, every voice empowered with reliable information, and every space created for dialogue contributes to laying the foundations for a more peaceful and resilient Sudan.

Peace begins with how we learn, communicate, understand one another and protect what brings us together.

Peace is not simply the absence of war. It depends on the ability of societies to confront disagreement without violence, protect human rights and dignity, and keep dialogue open when tensions rise.

Today, conflict, displacement, discrimination, hate speech, backsliding on rights and polarization are fracturing communities and eroding trust.

On this , UNESCO calls for greater investment in the institutions, skills and relationships that allow societies to address tensions before they turn into violence.

For more than 80 years, UNESCO has worked to build peace through education, culture, freedom of expression and dialogue.

Peace is never secured once and for all. It is built through institutions, relationships and daily choices.

Strengthening Community Media for Peace and Resilience in Sudan

UNESCO paid a visit to the Red Sea Radio Station as part of ongoing efforts to support media institutions in Sudan.

The visit helped identify the needs of the broadcasting system, the new infrastructure put in place, and the ongoing programmes and efforts to support communities in countering hate speech, enhancing social cohesion, promoting peaceful coexistence, and advancing education.

The visit also resulted in fruitful discussions, and UNESCO looks forward to continuing collaboration towards building peaceful, resilient and educated communities through access to information and accurate messaging.

من الحوار إلى العمل: مكافحة خطاب الكراهية وتعزيز التماسك الاجتماعي في السودان

جمعت اليونسكو في بورتسودان عدداً من الجهات الفاعلة في مجالات التعليم والإعلام والثقافة وبناء السلام، بهدف تعزيز العمل المشترك لمكافحة خطاب الكراهية ودعم السلام والتماسك الاجتماعي في السودان.

وبمشاركة السيد عثمان عمر عثمان، وزير التربية والتوجيه بولاية كسلا، واللجنة الوطنية السودانية للتربية والعلم والثقافة، ومؤسسات الإذاعة والتلفزيون في ولايتي كسلا والبحر الأحمر، والإذاعة المجتمعية، وجامعة البحر الأحمر، ومركز دراسات السلام، إلى جانب عدد من الشركاء، تناولت المناقشات دور التعليم والثقافة والإعلام والقيادات المجتمعية في الوقاية من خطاب الكراهية وتعزيز التعايش السلمي.

وستسهم الأولويات والتحديات والتوصيات التي تم تحديدها في توجيه أنشطة المشروع ودعم الجهود الرامية إلى إعداد خطة عمل وطنية لمكافحة خطاب الكراهية في السودان.

Turning Dialogue into Action: Countering Hate Speech and Building Social Cohesion in Sudan

UNESCO brought together education, media, culture and peacebuilding actors in Port Sudan to strengthen collective action against hate speech and promote peace and social cohesion in Sudan.

With the participation of Mr. Osman Omer Osman, Minister of Education and Guidance of Kassala State, the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, radio and television institutions from Kassala and Red Sea States, Community Radio, Red Sea University, the Peace Studies Centre and other partners, discussions explored how education, culture, media and community leadership can help prevent hate speech and strengthen peaceful coexistence.

The priorities, challenges and recommendations identified will help inform the project and contribute to the development of a National Action Plan to Counter Hate Speech in Sudan.

تعزيز الصحافة المهنية وسلامة الصحفيين في السودان

أطلق مكتب اليونسكو في السودان، بالعاصمة الخرطوم، أولى ورش عمله المخصصة للصحفيين في العاصمة، في إطار أنشطة قطاع الاتصال والمعلومات، في خطوة مهمة نحو دعم الصحفيين السودانيين وتمكينهم من أداء عملهم بأمان ومهنية في سياق متأثر بالنزاع.

وتُعقد الورشة، التي تستمر أربعة أيام، برعاية وزارة الثقافة والإعلام والآثار والسياحة، بمشاركة 25 صحفياً وإعلامياً، بهدف تعزيز الصحافة المهنية، وتحسين سلامة الصحفيين، وتنمية مهاراتهم العملية في التصدي للمعلومات الخاطئة والمضللة.

وخلال الجلسة الافتتاحية، أكدت الوزارة أن مواجهة المعلومات المضللة تتطلب إعلاماً قوياً ومهنياً، وصحفيين يمتلكون المعارف والمهارات اللازمة للبحث عن الحقيقة، والتحقق من المعلومات، والتواصل مع الجمهور بمسؤولية.

وفي إطار ولايتها، تواصل اليونسكو دعم الصحفيين باعتبارهم فاعلين أساسيين في ضمان الوصول إلى معلومات موثوقة، وتعزيز حرية التعبير، وبناء مجتمعات قادرة على الصمود، ولا سيما في أوقات النزاع. ويُعد تمكين الصحفيين بالمعارف والمهارات والأدوات اللازمة للتعامل مع المخاطر والتحديات عنصراً محورياً في بناء بيئة إعلامية أكثر قوة ومهنية في السودان.

تُنظم الورشة بالتعاون مع وزارة الثقافة والإعلام والآثار والسياحة، واللجنة الوطنية السودانية للتربية والعلم والثقافة، ومنظمة MiCT.

ويُعرب مكتب اليونسكو في السودان عن تقديره للدعم المتواصل الذي يقدمه شركاؤه في هذا المجال الحيوي، ويؤكد التزامه بمواصلة دعم المبادرات الرامية إلى تعزيز الإعلام والصحافة في السودان، بما يتماشى مع ولاية اليونسكو.

Strengthening Professional Journalism and Safety in Sudan

In Khartoum, UNESCO Sudan launched its first workshop for journalists in the capital as part of the Communication and Information Sector, marking an important step in supporting and empowering Sudanese journalists to work safely and professionally in a conflict-affected context.

Held under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, Information, Antiquities and Tourism, the four-day workshop brings together 25 journalists and media professionals to strengthen professional journalism, enhance journalists’ safety, and build practical skills to counter misinformation and disinformation.

Speaking at the opening, the Ministry emphasized that confronting disinformation requires strong, professional media and journalists equipped with the knowledge and skills to seek the truth, verify information, and communicate responsibly with the public.

Through its mandate, UNESCO continues to support journalists as essential actors for access to reliable information, freedom of expression and resilient societies, particularly in times of conflict. Empowering journalists with the knowledge, skills and tools to navigate risks and challenges is central to building a stronger and more professional media environment in Sudan.

The workshop is organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Information, Antiquities and Tourism, the Sudanese National Commission for UNESCO, and MiCT.

تعزيز مستقبل تعليم الإعلام في السودان

تعمل اليونسكو في السودان على توسيع نطاق مشاركتها في مجال تعليم الإعلام من خلال التعاون مع جامعة إفريقيا العالمية، وذلك عقب مناقشات مع مدير الجامعة البروفيسور حاتم عثمان وعدد من أعضاء هيئة التدريس بقسم الإعلام.

وتركزت المناقشات على المؤتمر المرتقب حول تطوير علوم الاتصال والإعلام والتعليم الإعلامي في السودان، إلى جانب فرص تطوير المناهج الإعلامية، وبناء قدرات الأساتذة والطلاب، ودفع التحول الرقمي، ودمج التقنيات الناشئة في التعليم الإعلامي.

ويسر اليونسكو أن تسهم بخبراتها الفنية ودعمها في مجال بناء القدرات، بما يعزز قدرات أساتذة الإعلام والطلاب ويطور المناهج، إلى جانب بناء شراكات أقوى ورؤية مشتركة لمستقبل الاتصال والتعليم الإعلامي في السودان.

Strengthening the Future of Media Education in Sudan

UNESCO Sudan is expanding its engagement in media education through collaboration with the International University of Africa, following discussions with Vice Chancellor Prof. Hatim Othman and faculty members from the Department of Mass Communication.

Discussions focused on the upcoming conference on the development of Mass Communication and Media Education in Sudan, alongside opportunities to strengthen media curricula, build the capacities of educators and students, advance digital transformation, and integrate emerging technologies.

UNESCO is pleased to contribute its technical expertise and capacity-building support, strengthening media educators, students and curricula while building stronger partnerships and a shared vision for the future of communication and media education in Sudan.

🌿 من التقييم إلى العمل: دفع جهود تعافي المناطق المحمية في السودان

حققت اليونسكو في السودان، بالشراكة مع المبادرة السودانية للتنمية (SUDIA)، محطة مهمة من خلال المصادقة الوطنية على استراتيجية وخطة التعافي لصون المناطق المحمية في السودان في ظل النزاع.

تستند الاستراتيجية إلى بيانات وأدلة جُمعت من 15 منطقة محمية مُعتمدة رسمياً موزعة على خمس مناطق بيئية، ومشاورات شملت 139 مشاركاً، إلى جانب تحليل 370 استجابة نوعية. ومن أبرز النتائج أن 100% من المشاركين على المستوى الوطني أشاروا إلى أن نقص التمويل يشكل عائقاً أمام الإدارة الأساسية والفعّالة للمناطق المحمية.

وجمعت عملية المصادقة 32 من أصحاب المصلحة، من بينهم 11 امرأة، بمشاركة اللجنة الوطنية السودانية للتربية والعلم والثقافة، ومركز بحوث الحياة البرية، والإدارة العامة لحماية الحياة البرية، وعدد من وكالات الأمم المتحدة.

وترسم الاستراتيجية وخطة التعافي مساراً يبدأ من توفير الدعم العاجل لحراس الحياة البرية وتعزيز نظم الرصد والمتابعة، وصولاً إلى استعادة التنوع البيولوجي والنظم البيئية، وتعزيز الحوكمة، وإعادة تأهيل المؤسسات، وتأمين التمويل المستدام، بما يدعم حماية المناطق المحمية في السودان، بما في ذلك محميات المحيط الحيوي الثلاث التابعة لشبكة اليونسكو وموقعي التراث العالمي البحريين.

ومن خلال خطة اليونسكو للعمل الطارئ من أجل السودان 2025–2027، تواصل اليونسكو العمل مع المؤسسات الوطنية والشركاء لتحويل الأدلة إلى إجراءات ملموسة وحشد الدعم لتعافي التنوع البيولوجي والتراث الطبيعي في السودان.

🌿 From Assessment to Action: Advancing the Recovery of Sudan’s Protected Areas

UNESCO Sudan, in partnership with the Sudanese Development Initiative (SUDIA), has reached an important milestone with the national validation of the Strategy and Recovery Plan for the Conservation of Protected Areas in Sudan amid Conflict.

The strategy is grounded in evidence from 15 officially designated protected areas across five ecological zones, consultations with 139 respondents, and analysis of 370 qualitative responses. Critically, 100% of national-level respondents identified insufficient financing as a constraint to essential protected-area management.

The validation brought together 32 stakeholders, including 11 women, with the participation of the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture (NatCom), Wildlife Research Center, Wildlife Conservation General Administration, and UN agencies.

The validated framework charts a pathway from urgent support to wildlife rangers and monitoring systems to biodiversity and ecosystem recovery, stronger governance, institutional rehabilitation and sustainable financing, supporting the protection of Sudan’s protected areas, including its three UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and two marine World Heritage sites.

Through its Emergency Action Plan for Sudan 2025–2027, UNESCO is working with national institutions and partners to turn evidence into action and mobilize support for the recovery of Sudan’s biodiversity and natural heritage.

♿📚 من الدمج إلى التطبيق: افتتاح غرفة مصادر جديدة لدعم المتعلمين ذوي الإعاقة

خطت اليونسكو، بالتعاون مع وزارة التعليم والتربية الوطنية، واللجنة الوطنية السودانية للتربية والعلم والثقافة، والفريق القومي للتعليم الدامج، والشركاء، خطوة مهمة نحو تعزيز التعليم الدامج في ولاية البحر الأحمر، وذلك عقب ورشة لبناء القدرات استمرت لمدة أسبوع في مدرسة بورتسودان الصناعية.

زوّدت الورشة المعلمين بالمعارف والممارسات العملية في مجال التعليم الدامج، بما في ذلك الأنشطة الصفية، والإرشادات الموجهة لمعلمي التعليم الدامج، والاستخدام الفعّال لغرف المصادر لدعم المتعلمين ذوي الإعاقة.

واستكمالاً لهذا التدريب، تم التسليم الرسمي وافتتاح غرفة مصادر جديدة ومجهزة في مدرسة بورتسودان الصناعية، بحضور ممثلين عن وزارة التعليم والتربية الوطنية، واليونسكو، والفريق القومي للتعليم الدامج، ومنظمة الرؤية العالمية (World Vision). وستوفر الغرفة موارد تعليمية متخصصة ودعماً إضافياً لمساعدة الطلاب ذوي الإعاقة على التعلّم والمشاركة والازدهار جنباً إلى جنب مع أقرانهم.

ومن تعزيز قدرات المعلمين إلى توفير الدعم العملي مباشرة داخل المدارس، تعمل اليونسكو وشركاؤها على ترجمة التعليم الدامج إلى ممارسة فعلية، وبناء بيئات تعليمية يجد فيها كل متعلم مكانه وفرصته للتعلم والمشاركة.

♿📚 Turning Inclusion into Action: A New Resource Room for Learners with Disabilities

UNESCO, together with the Ministry of Education, the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture (NatCom), the National Inclusive Education Team and partners, marked an important step forward for inclusive education in Red Sea State following a week-long capacity-building workshop at Port Sudan Industrial School.

The workshop equipped teachers with practical approaches to inclusive education, including classroom activities, guidance for inclusive education teachers, and the effective use of resource rooms to support learners with disabilities.

Building on this training, a newly equipped Resource Room was officially handed over and opened at Port Sudan Industrial School, in the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Education, UNESCO, the National Inclusive Education Team and World Vision. The room will provide dedicated learning resources and additional support to help students with disabilities learn, participate and thrive alongside their peers.

From strengthening teachers' capacities to putting practical support directly into schools, UNESCO and its partners are helping move inclusive education into practice – creating learning environments where every learner has a place.
