Humanity for Development and Prosperity Organization (HDPO) led a drama-based community awareness session in Doka Village, Western Galabat Locality, Al Gedaref State, this week, as part of our ongoing environmental and renewable energy campaign promoting fuel-efficient stoves and sustainable environmental practices.

Implemented with partner and support from IOM Sudan and funding from the United Nations Peacekeeping, under the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) project for conflict-affected communities in Eastern Sudan.

The session brought together 200 community members and was attended by representatives from UNDP, UNHCR, and IOM, alongside a delegation from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation during their visit to Doka. Their presence reflects the growing recognition of HDPO's community-centred programming and its role in advancing locally led resilience and peacebuilding across Eastern Sudan.

Through interactive theatre and participatory engagement, the team strengthened awareness of environmental protection, renewable energy, sustainable natural resource management, and the need to reduce pressure on local resources, all in support of peaceful coexistence and long-term community resilience.

Implemented with partner and support from IOM Sudan and funding from the UN Peacebuilding Fund, under the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) project for conflict-affected communities in Eastern Sudan.

HDPO conducted a market assessment and community consultations (FGDs) across 20 villages in Western and Eastern Galabat, AL Gedaref state, engaging communities to identify appropriate fuel-efficient cooking solutions.

The activity included 143 household surveys, 9 FGDs, and key informant interviews, highlighting heavy reliance on firewood, increased exposure to smoke especially among women and children and growing environmental pressure linked to deforestation.

The activity is implemented by HDPO with partner and support from IOM Sudan and funded by United Nations Peacekeeping, contributing to improved environmental sustainability, public health, and community resilience.

Communities expressed strong demand for improved stoves that reduce smoke, save fuel, and align with local cooking needs. Discussions also highlighted the connection between resource scarcity and local conflict, emphasizing the role of sustainable solutions in promoting peace and resilience.

The assessment identified opportunities for local production, artisan training, and awareness campaigns, alongside the need for pilot testing and flexible cost-sharing mechanisms to ensure adoption and sustainability.
