The Pag-asa Social Center Foundation, one of the premier "social expressions" of the Focolare Movement in the Philippines, is a textbook example of New Humanity (NH) in action. While the international NGO branch of NH works at the institutional level with organizations like the UN and UNESCO, Pag-asa operates as the vital "hands and feet" on the ground, translating the grand philosophy of universal fraternity into concrete, life-changing realities for the community.
If anyone asks whether Pag-asa is doing something on behalf of New Humanity, the answer is a resounding yes.
The core mission of New Humanity is to infuse social structures, communities, and systems with the spirit of universal brotherhood to eliminate marginalization. Pag-asa carries this out directly by providing a holistic web of support to over 300 children and more than 200 low-income families across Tagaytay and neighboring areas like Noveleta, Laurel, and Agoncillo.
Running the Daycare Center, providing university scholarships, and operating medical and dental clinics are not viewed as mere charity. They are tools to help individuals re-acquire their dignity, discover their worth, and become self-sufficient, productive members of society.
One of the distinct signatures of New Humanity is that it rejects the traditional, top-down giver-and-receiver dynamic. Instead, it focuses on reciprocity and the "communion of goods."
Pag-asa embodies this by fostering a culture where beneficiaries are active participants, not passive recipients. Parents volunteer to assist teachers, youth lead mini-camps, and former scholarship beneficiaries return to donate or volunteer for the center. This creates a true family dynamic where everyone contributes what they can, proving that a "new humanity" is built on mutual love.
New Humanity seeks to build a supportive and peaceful society that actively responds to human suffering.
When local communities face acute hardships, Pag-asa acts as the hands and feet of this movement on the ground. A clear example of this is the mobilization of the PAGtulong Relief Operations during severe weather crises (such as the recent typhoons). Bringing together staff, youth, seminarians, and local partners to distribute aid across Cavite and Batangas is a direct manifestation of living the Gospel in the social sphere.
The New Humanity movement relies on a global network of solidarity. Through programs like Support-at-a-Distance (which connects local children with global sponsors, often moving in tandem with Focolare's New Families Movement), Pag-asa serves as a crucial hub. It manages these international relationships transparently and ensures that global solidarity translates into real, measurable local impact.
In short, Pag-asa doesn't just help New Humanity, it is New Humanity. Every grant secured, every child taught to mix colors, every medical patient treated, and every family lifted up is the Gospel being translated into social action.
