Christmas came in early for the Katala!

Inga Foersters, an Australian advocate for the Philippine Cockatoo, raised funds to support the species’ conservation starting from something as simple as a school project. By creating and selling Christmas parols, she turned a small idea into meaningful action for wildlife. 🌿

Inga was schooled in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, about ten years ago. During her brief stay in the country, she was enamoured with the holiday traditions of the Filipinos, bright and colourful as they are. Some of her most fond memories are of her family creating Christmas parols and visiting Christmas festivals.

Her appreciation for Philippine culture naturally extended to its rich biodiversity. She learned about the Katala, one of the country’s most threatened bird species, and saw firsthand how even small efforts can help tip the balance toward its survival. No matter how far away it may come from!

Stories like Inga’s remind us that conservation is not only about grand actions, but also about simple, heartfelt ones. A small act of appreciation can go a long way.

Thanks to intensive protection, 1,682 Katalas have taken flight in over the last two decades. This progress reflects the power of strong partnerships between local communities and governments, former poachers turned wardens and line agencies, and the continuous protection of nests and habitats. However, the future of the species still hangs in the balance.

Today, only 919-1,290 individuals remain in the wild, with most of the global population concentrated in just four sites in Palawan. Only two of these are legally protected. This makes the species highly vulnerable to threats, including habitat loss, poaching, and emerging challenges, such as disease and extreme weather.

🌿 Adding to this momentum, the Philippine Cockatoo Conservation Program will be featured in an international parrot event, with Peter Widmann, the Species Conservation Director of the Katala Foundation, delivering a highlight talk on inclusive species conservation. This event is supported by Fonds für bedrohte Papageien and ZGAP. All proceeds from the event go directly to supporting the project, reinforcing global support for the Katala’s recovery.

Congratulations to our KFI co-founder and director, Dr. Sabine Schoppe, recipient of the 21st Behler Turtle Conservation Award, presented during the 24th Annual Symposium on the Conservation and Biology of Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles held in Mexico.

Dr. Schoppe received this prestigious honor in recognition of her scientific expertise and decades-long conservation work for the critically endangered Philippine/Palawan Freshwater Turtle, locally known as the Bakoko.

Taking inspiration from the successful implementation of the Philippine Cockatoo Conservation Program, Dr. Schoppe launched the Philippine/Palawan Freshwater Turtle Conservation Program in 2007. Since then, she has been at the forefront of efforts to secure and restore protected habitats for the Bakoko, develop ex-situ conservation strategies, advance scientific research, and implement initiatives that have helped bring this remarkable species back from the brink of extinction.

This International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples, wildlife wardens now use their deep understanding of forests and wildlife to safeguard the very species they once threatened. Sustaining this progress means going further by integrating Indigenous experts into formal government systems where their knowledge is not only recognized, but supported and sustained. When local expertise is truly embedded in conservation, it becomes a lasting force rooted in people, place, and purpose.

"Was hat der Kakadu jemals für uns getan? – Wie inklusiv sind Artenschutzprojekte am Beispiel des Philippine Cockatoo Conservation Programs?"

➡️ Peter Jürgen Widmann studierte Biologie an der Universität Hohenheim in Stuttgart. Seit mehr als 30 Jahren engagiert er sich in Umweltschutzprojekten in tropischen und subtropischen Regionen, insbesondere auf den Philippinen und in Indonesien. Sein beruflicher Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Schutz hochbedrohter Tierarten, dem Management natürlicher Ressourcen sowie der Entwicklung nachhaltiger Naturschutzkonzepte unter Einbeziehung der lokalen Bevölkerung.

Als Mitgründer und Vizepräsident der Katala Foundation, Inc. mit Sitz auf Palawan (Philippinen) verantwortet er die Planung, Umsetzung und wissenschaftliche Begleitung zahlreicher Artenschutzprojekte. Die Stiftung setzt sich insbesondere für den Schutz stark bedrohter Tierarten und ihrer Lebensräume ein. Zu seinen Aufgaben gehört die Verantwortung für acht Projektstandorte auf Palawan und Mindanao sowie die wissenschaftliche Aufsicht, Auswertung und Dokumentation der Projektfortschritte in Fachpublikationen und öffentlichen Medien.

Im Rahmen seiner internationalen Tätigkeit arbeitete Widmann unter anderem am Nestschutz des Höckerstorches und des Sundamarabus in West-Kalimantan (Indonesien), insbesondere im Mündungsgebiet des Kapuas-Flusses und im Danau-Sentarum-Nationalpark. Darüber hinaus verfügt er über umfassende Erfahrung in der nachhaltigen Nutzung biologischer Vielfalt und im Management natürlicher Ressourcen in Zusammenarbeit mit lokalen Gemeinschaften auf den Philippinen, in Indonesien, Nepal und der Volksrepublik China.

Als Programmleiter der in Asien tätigen Nichtregierungsorganisation entwickelte und koordinierte er Schutzprogramme für zahlreiche bedrohte Arten, darunter den Rotsteißkakadu, den Palawan-Hornvogel, den Calamian-Hirsch, den Balabac-Maushirsch und das Palawan-Stachelschwein. Dabei setzte er konsequent auf ökosystemorientierte und partizipative Ansätze, die Naturschutz und die Bedürfnisse der lokalen Bevölkerung miteinander verbinden.

Zu seinen weiteren Leistungen zählen die Gründung eines Instituts für Forschung, Erhaltung und Bildung im Bereich der biologischen Vielfalt sowie umfangreiche Erfahrungen in der Wiederaufforstung von Regenwäldern und der Renaturierung von Süßwasserökosystemen. Darüber hinaus war er als Berater für die Entwicklung von Lehrplänen und Forschungsprogrammen im Bereich der Naturschutzbiologie für akademische Einrichtungen tätig.

Neben seinen langfristigen Projekten verfügt Peter Jürgen Widmann über eine Vielzahl kurz- und langfristiger Beratungsaufträge im internationalen Natur- und Artenschutz. Seine langjährige Erfahrung verbindet wissenschaftliche Expertise mit praktischer Projektarbeit und macht ihn zu einem ausgewiesenen Experten für Biodiversitätsschutz, Artenschutzmanagement und nachhaltige Naturschutzstrategien.

This , we honor the transformation of former poachers into wildlife wardens and feature some of the very first who served in Rasa Island since 1998. Those who once harmed, now heal and protect. Their journey reminds us that change can be within reach, and that each of us can choose to care for the environment through our daily actions. These wardens stand as a testament to how years of boots-on-the-ground conservation efforts can effectively protect the Katala.

The wildlife warden scheme is one of the most effective strategies driving the recovery of the Philippine Cockatoo across four sites in Palawan:
🪸 Rasa Island (since 1998)
🌱 Dumaran Island (since 2003)
🏝️ Pandanan and Bugsuk Islands (since 2009)
🏞️ Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (since 2014)

This tribute extends to all our wildlife wardens across the four project sites, including the wardens of the Green Heart of Palawan Wildlife Conservation Program. Their work—guarding nests, climbing trees, and protecting life every day—𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦.

This World Nature Conservation Day 2026, we are proud to share that our paper documenting decades of conservation work on the recovery of the Philippine Cockatoo has finally been published.

Titled “Recovery of the Philippine Cockatoo 𝘊𝘢𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘢 𝘩𝘢𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘺𝘨𝘪𝘢 in four intensively managed conservation sites in Palawan, Philippines,” the paper details the steady increase in the species’ population from 2000 to 2024, alongside the conservation interventions that made this progress possible. Through close-order management—particularly, the protection and monitoring of breeding pairs—1,682 individuals have successfully fledged across our project sites. Furthermore, the paper not only distills the success of these efforts, but also addresses the critical challenges that remain.

Much work still lies ahead. Our project sites continue to face increasing external pressures that threaten not only the Philippine Cockatoo but other wildlife as well. These include encroachment, poaching, habitat destruction, and unsustainable development. It is imperative that relevant authorities, alongside local communities and partners, strengthen protection measures and ensure that conservation gains are sustained for years to come.

As we celebrate conservation milestones, we continue to raise our voices for the protection of Malabo Forest, Pandanan Island, and Bugsuk Island. Together, we call for their recognition as Critical Habitats and safe havens for the Philippine Cockatoo and other threatened wildlife. This also includes advancing the Congressional Act for the Rasa Island Wildlife Sanctuary.
