𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘀, 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲! 𝗗𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃. 🍊

Ang Melodious o Palawan Babbler ay itinatawag ng tribung Tagbanua bilang “Buyok-otin” dahil sa mala-musikang huni nito na may pagtaas at pagbaba ng tono. Ito ay isang himig na tiyak na makabibighani sa sinumang makarinig.

Ang Buyok-otin ay isang endemic na ibon na matatagpuan lamang sa probinsya ng Palawan at itinuturing na isang lowland forest specialist, kagaya ng Philippine Cockatoo o Katala. Dahil sa limitadong saklaw nito at sa iba’t ibang banta na kinahaharap, tulad ng deforestation at mga bagyo, ito ay inuri ng IUCN bilang Vulnerable.

Mahalaga ang pagpoprotekta sa kanilang mga likas na tirahan, tulad ng Malabo Forest at Balabac, para sa patuloy na pagpaparami ng uri na ito. Kaya ngayong World Environment Day, alalahanin natin na sa bawat hakbang upang pangalagaan ang kanilang tirahan, pinangangalagaan din natin ang kanilang kinabukasan.

This World Environment Day calls us to act to protect what is ours. As sentient beings, we carry a responsibility to care for the environment and to exercise all we can to preserve life. For the Philippine Cockatoo and Palawan biodiversity, time is running out: habitats are shrinking, threats are intensifying, and silence is creeping into once-vibrant forests.

Every mindful action and every effort toward lasting habitat protection matters. Act now, so their voices continue to echo in the wild, and life endures for generations to come.

Even beyond World Parrot Day, the work continues. As part of our series, we turn to Balabac, where conservation persists through partnership despite growing pressure on the last remaining coastal forests.

Here, progress is hard-won. While communities and LGUs push forward with joint patrols and protection, forest loss continues in other parts of the island group. Tree planting helps, but only gradually. In addition, urgent action remains needed on the ground.

Conservation cannot rely on chance alone. It must be matched with protection, before what remains is gone.

Establish enduring protection, establish Pandanan Island and Bugsuk Island Critical Habitats!

On World Parrot Day, and as part of our series, we celebrate the collective effort between different agencies and institutions to protect the Philippine Cockatoo and its habitats at Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm and Puerto Princesa City.

It’s a reminder that conservation doesn’t happen in isolation and even within a penal reservation. When institutions, communities, and individuals come together, real impact follows, and the momentum keeps growing. Shared vision is shared responsibility.

On May 7, 2026, distinguished representatives from Viet Nam’s environment sector and WWF-Vietnam engaged in a knowledge exchange on biodiversity conservation and management strategies implemented within lowland forests in the penal reservation and surrounding communities through the Katala Foundation Inc., in close partnership with the IPPF, BuCor, key indigenous peoples, DENR, PCSDS, and the Western Command. In this brief engagement, participants acquired relevant ideas into inclusive community education and innovative conservation approaches such as the wildlife warden scheme, aimed at strengthening the protection and effectiveness of Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) in their respective country contexts.

Edgardo F. Mendoza Jr. During the discussion, Ms. Vu Thi B**h Hau, Deputy Director General of the Department of Agriculture of Da Nang City, expressed particular interest and appreciation in how partnerships between non-governmental organizations and correction agencies are structured to design and implement conservation-focused initiatives. In response, C/Supt. Mendoza and KFI COO Indira Widmann outlined several collaborative efforts, including joint monitoring activities, the production of conservation-themed merchandise by persons deprived of liberty (PDLs), and reformative-oriented programs for PDLs.

The visiting delegation brought in by WWF-Phils witnessed firsthand the strength of multi-stakeholder collaboration and sustained commitment to the conservation of the Philippine Cockatoo. This shared passion for biodiversity conservation, alongside local pride in safeguarding native wildlife, continues to be a vital force in ensuring the survival of threatened species.

A rescue operation was carried out by PCSDS, BUCOR, and KFI following an attempted poaching of three Katala hatchlings. The young birds were safely retrieved from a nest tree in a high-risk poaching zone within a penal reservation, where encroachment continues to threaten wildlife.

to our who answered the call of duty, even on a day meant for rest. The Katala hatchlings are now safe in our facility at the Katala Institute and will be reared until they are ready to be released back into the wild.
