๐Ÿ’šAs a member of the IUCN National Committee Philippines, together with IUCN Regional Director for Asia, Dr. Dindo Campilan, we joined a courtesy meeting with Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Atty. Mitch Cuna to discuss collaborative actions for the country's environment.

๐Ÿƒ The meeting provided an opportunity to formally introduce the newly established IUCN National Committee Philippines to the DENR leadership, present its strategic priorities, and discuss areas of alignment.

๐ŸคAs part of the discussion, the Committee reaffirmed its commitment to supporting DENR's biodiversity conservation and sustainable development agenda. Potential areas of collaboration were identified, including technical and strategic support for national biodiversity initiatives and participation in relevant technical working groups.

๐Ÿค UNDP Philippines

๐ŸŽ‰ Forest Foundation Philippines, in partnership with UNDP Philippines, recently launched the Eighth Operational Phase of the GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP8), continuing over 30 years of empowering local Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Community-based Organizations (CBOs) to lead community-driven environmental action.

๐ŸŒฑ SGP8 strengthens landscapeโ€“seascape approaches that integrate biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and community well-being, while providing capacity building and grant support to local communities.

๐Ÿ“ Funded by the Global Environment Facility, SGP8 will be implemented with UNDP Philippines and DENRโ€“BMB until 2028, reaching key biodiversity and conservation areas across the country including Aurora, Quezon, Calamianes Group of Islands, Catanduanes, Cluster 6 River Basin in Samar, Siargao Island Protected Landscapes and Seascapes, and Surigao del Norte.

๐Ÿ’ฌ UNDP Philippines Resident Representative Christopher Bahuet emphasized the central role of communities in the programme, saying, โ€œCommunities serve as the heart and soul of the SGP. It mobilizes bottom-up action by empowering civil society organizations and community-based organizations, including womenโ€™s organizations, Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ organizations, and other marginalized and vulnerable sectors.โ€

๐Ÿ’ฌ Ms. Edwina Garchitorena, Chairperson of Forest Foundation Philippines, shared, โ€œIn alignment with the SGP strategy, we at Forest Foundation Philippines strongly believe that when communities are equipped and trusted, they become the most impactful and effective stewards of the environment. We are eager and grateful for the opportunity to further broaden our reach and support more communities across diverse ecosystems.โ€

๐ŸขThis , letโ€™s celebrate and protect sea turtles, ancient ocean dwellers that have shaped marine ecosystems for over 110 million years.

๐ŸŒŠFrom coral reefs to seagrass beds, they play a vital role in keeping our oceans healthy while also holding deep cultural and ecological significance.

๐ŸฅบBut sea turtles face growing threats, from pollution and climate change to habitat loss and human activities.

๐Ÿคž The good news? Small everyday actions can make a real difference in their survival!

๐Ÿ“ฃ Today, we are celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity ( )!

๐ŸŒ IDB is observed annually to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity ( ), a global commitment to protect life on Earth in all its forms.

โœจ This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œActing locally for global impact,โ€ highlights a powerful truth: Meaningful change begins at the local level.

๐ŸŒŸ The success of global efforts to halt and reverse biodiversity loss depends on the strength of local action, on the commitment of communities, organizations, Indigenous Peoples (IPs), and governments working together to protect and conserve the environment.

๐Ÿ’š To contribute to this global effort, we supported the Updating of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) in the Philippines to come up with an updated KBA list in the Philippines, and to facilitate its use in the conservation and sustainable management of our biodiversity.

๐Ÿค This project is being implemented by our grantees, the Biodiversity Conservation Society of the Philippines, Haribon Foundation, UP Diliman Institute of Biology Alumni.

๐ŸŒณ Conserving biodiversity is a shared responsibility, rooted in local action and scaled through collective effort.

๐Ÿ’Œ Do you know an area that may qualify as a KBA? You may nominate a site or submit relevant data, studies, or documentation through this link: https://bit.ly/FFPIBD26.
