More than 80% of global trade is carried by sea, but behind every cargo movement, port call and supply chain is a seafarer making it happen.

This World Maritime Day, we celebrate the people whose commitment, expertise and resilience keep the maritime industry operating every day, often far from their families and loved ones.

Produced by the talented cadets in Productions at The Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific through a collaboration between IMEC, MAAP and Inmarsat, this short film shines a light on the human side of shipping and the connections that support those at sea.

To every seafarer, thank you for your contribution to the movement of global trade and to the communities that depend upon it.

On Deck with IMEC, a huge success for Cadets

On a standard Tuesday evening during IMECs visit to MAAP, the IMEC Building welcomed approximately 350+ cadets for On Deck with IMEC, a new initiative designed to bring cadets and the IMEC team together in an informal, open-door setting without an agenda other than to hear their voices and connect.

As the first event of its kind, we weren't quite sure what to expect. The overwhelming turnout exceeded all expectations and demonstrated just how valuable these opportunities are for cadets to engage directly with IMEC Secretariat, ask questions, share their experiences and gain insights into their future careers at sea.

The evening was filled with meaningful conversations, thoughtful questions, laughter and a genuine sense of community. It was inspiring to see so many future seafarers take advantage of the opportunity to connect, learn, and contribute to discussions about life and careers in the maritime industry.

A huge thank you to every cadet who joined us and helped make this inaugural event such a success. Given the incredible response, we hope this will be the first of many On Deck with IMEC sessions.

Welcoming the IMEC Class of 2030 at The Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific

We are proud to celebrate the successful inauguration of 264 Cadets, our largest intake to date including a record 47 female cadets into the IMEC Class of 2030 at the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP). The event took place on Thursday the 20th of August despite the weather trying to put a hold on proceedings. It marked the beginning of an exciting journey for the newest generation of aspiring maritime professionals joining the IMEC Cadet Programme.

The inauguration brought together MAAP leadership, IMEC Secretariat and cadets to officially welcome the class as they embark on their maritime education and training. The ceremony highlighted the values of professionalism, excellence, leadership, and commitment that will guide these cadets throughout their development into future officers. With a welcome address by Vice Admiral Ed Santos, Keynote speech by Francesco Gargiulo IMEC CEO, words of encouragement and support from Larissa Taylor Deputy Head of Training with the closing remarks from Rob Gale Head of Training.

At IMEC, we remain committed to investing in the next generation of seafarers by providing world class training opportunities, industry engagement and support throughout their cadetship journey and beyond. We look forward to following the progress of the Class of 2030 and witnessing their growth as future leaders of the maritime industry.

Congratulations to the graduates of the Nautilus Pacific Maritime Training Center ETO Programme Batch 1!

IMEC was proud to join our partners Nautilus Pacific Maritime Training Center Inc in celebrating this important milestone and the successful completion of the programme by the first cohort of ETO cadets. The ceremony recognised the cadets' hard work, dedication and commitment to building careers at sea.

We were honoured that Francesco Gargiulo delivered the keynote address, encouraging the graduates as they embark on the next stage of their maritime careers. There were also words of encouragement from Rob Gale as well as representatives of the Sponsor companies in attendance, showing the commitment and support by all involved.

A fantastic achievement for all involved and a testament to the power of industry collaboration in developing the next generation of maritime talent.

We are delighted to share that IMEC has been shortlisted for the Health and Wellbeing at Sea Award at the Seatrade Maritime Crew Connect Global Awards 2026 for our initiative, "Women at Sea, Period. – IMEC's Period Dignity Scheme for Female Seafarers."

This recognition reflects our commitment to improving the health, wellbeing and inclusion of women preparing for careers at sea. Developed in response to feedback from female cadets, the scheme provides access to menstrual products, menstrual health education, sustainable alternatives and ongoing welfare support, helping to address period poverty and promote dignity within our industry.
We are incredibly proud of the positive impact this initiative continues to have and would like to thank everyone who has supported its development and success.

IMEC is proud to collaborate with The Hood on the Sisterhood Box, providing practical wellbeing resources, menstrual health education and branded products for the female cadets in our programme.

The concept was developed through a shared commitment to create a more inclusive and supportive industry for women at sea, starting this from day one of their journey. With The Hood leading the Sisterhood Box concept, a combined passion led to us collaborating on what would be useful in those first few months. It also enabled us to utilise our partnered sanitary provision provider, Halia who we had previously collaborated with who also supported this initiative. The box provided not only tangible items but information regarding academy and IMEC secretariat details, Sanitary provisions, Mental health support and brand awareness.

For IMEC, this initiative is a natural extension of our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion ambitions, ensuring female cadets have access to the resources, education, and support they need to thrive throughout their maritime careers.

Together, we are demonstrating the power of partnership in driving meaningful change for the next generation of women seafarers.

Strengthening Partnerships, Supporting Seafarers

IMEC was pleased to recently meet with the Adopt A Ship team, led by George Hoyt as Founder and Global Coordinator, with C/O Jeffrey Aldas as Managing Coordinator for the Philippines, at their new office facilities in San Pedro, Laguna.

The meeting provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the current progress of the initiatives activities, explore the next steps in its development, and reaffirm the strong relationship that has continued to grow through IMEC's funding and strategic support.

The Adopt A Ship initiative alone has this year reached 32 schools, over 37,500 students with the support of 13 industry partners!

We are encouraged by the positive impact being delivered and the exciting plans ahead. Meetings such as these provide an important opportunity to reflect openly on both achievements and future opportunities, ensuring Adopt A Ship International remains focused on delivering meaningful outcomes. We look forward to sharing more information soon on the broader range of activities and initiatives supported by the organisation as it continues its important work within the local maritime community.

19 August 2026 – IMEC Class 2030 MOA Signing at MAAP

An exciting step forward for Class 2030! MAAP cadets marked the beginning of their participation in the IMEC Cadet Training Program with the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA).

Guided by our Training Manager, Jake Amog, the cadets had the opportunity to review the documents, ask questions, and better understand the program. It was a valuable opportunity to discuss the responsibilities and obligations of both IMEC and the cadets, helping everyone start with a clear understanding of their commitments.

With the agreements signed and a new chapter ahead, we’re excited to see Class 2030 learn, grow, and make the most of their training.
